What would Rust be like if you started making a wooden shield, wooden sword/spear and cloth armor. Make a stone castle or a wooden house with your clan/group. Later if u get better recources make Metal armor and swords.

There's very few games that do first person melee combat decently. Rust would end up being like Skyrim, horrible combat system in an open sandbox.

Maybe mod support would let us do this, but who knows what Garry will add?

Would be cool to allow the kind of progression you see in stuff like Civilization, in which you start off as the kind of caveman guy but are able to progress into higher-tier ages of technology.

Would be very good if there appear medieval weapons, armour and castle blocks. A postapocaliptic middle ages. A good RPG server could be made.
I think Mount & Blade combat system should be added for melee weapons as well.

At the very least there should be a mod that allows this.

The only way melee would be awesome in this game would be if it would have the mechanics of Chivalry . With what it has now the closest option to what u wish is simply removing the auto weapons as they intend to and have only rusty weapons like the pipe shotgun, revolver etc

Yes, a mod along these lines would be a lot of fun.

They don't intend to remove the auto weapons, just make them harder to get.

The only melee weapons that would be worth adding in my opinion are very few, and not built to be reliable in combat.

One example being a short dagger for close quarter stabbing in order to injure the target (crouch status effect), and cause bleeding, but would hit slow inflicting very low damage.
