Use your rock to gather wood. Then use said wood to make wooden planks. Then make 1 foundation, 4 pillars, 3 walls, 1 doorway, 1 ceiling, and one door. Place it all down and you have a 1x1. There's your tip :).

Well, there are a ton of conversations about this on the forums here.
I would suggest doing three very simple things to get at least through the night.
At first spawn, do not do anything but find the simplest means to food. A Pig,chicken, etc.
After at least achieving some food to get you through, find a stack of wood. Get what you can out of that stack.
After which you should hit a stone node for a few stone resources in which you can make a hatchet.
Once you have done this, which shouldnt take you but a few minutes...get to the nearest covering but out of site ,especially if your dealing with night hours. The coast or waters edge underneath some rocks is a good area for this.
Set up a camp fire and get some food in you. If you have a few moments of light remaining you can attempt to kill some more animals with your hatchet. This will also provide some cloth for clothing.
While you are cooking your food you can also then craft some clothes.
You may have to rinse and repeat this step a few times until you are able to go out a little more each time without worrying about hunger. I would also highly suggest crafting a bow and arrow[s] as you "should" have enough mats to craft if you followed these steps a couple of times
The next steps are going to take you out of your comfort zone now that you have food ,clothes and a weapon. I would suggest that if you are comfortable going out by this time and seeing the map a little more that you dont venture to far. Always go back to the original area in which you started. This keeps you familiar with your surroundings and you begin to set a pattern on farming resources with day/and night. I farm during sunup and craft at night.
I would also suggest not building a temp shelter as these are pretty much worthless and can be knocked down rather easily. Instead, take refuge in a very hard to reach or accessible area. At least when you are a sleeper you wont be as visible as a shelter is.
Next...and this may take a little time until your comfortable. You need gear now, you need research kits and blueprints. Hit up a town and kill as many Red's as you can.
From there after getting geared, it is time to plan your base..or what I have done...bases.
Do not build a megaplex. Build multiple small bases and spread them out around the map that carry at least a back up of your entire gear in each one. This will make things a little less painful when/if you die.
From here man...you just gotta learn from your mistakes. Its all trial and error.
Stay as close to the road as possible without being ON the road. Make a mental marker on your location from a visual landmark and venture from there back to your campfire. Do this repeatedly until you are so familiar with the area that you wont forget how to get back.
If ever you find yourself on land walking and there are no resources....turn around and go back! You are probably going in a direction that will take you hours away from the game area and more than likely if you havent a clue where you are, you wont know how to get back,well...this means suicide and losing your gear.
Learn as much crafting as you can when you can, this is your lifeline
Survival is the name of the game. My longest was three weeks without a raid or death. You can do it if your smart
