I'm curious, does an airdrop have a time limit before it'll eventually disappear? or will it remain on the map indefinitely if not collected/emptied?

I've seen them disappear before my eyes. I am not sure if it is set per the admin or not, but they do go bye-bye.

I think (but I'm not 100% sure) it's around 8-10 minutes if the drop lands on normal ground, rock (like when it lands up a mountain) will degrade the box quicker and I've seen one that landed on rock disappear after 4 or 5 minutes. Purely guess work on the timing, since I didn't put a stop watch on it...

About 10 minutes
There was an airdrop on my server that landed high on the rocks where you couldn't reach. When it hit the ground I started my stopwatch. I told my teammate to go get some wood planks so we could build up and get it. Of course my teammates were both new to the game and got lost coming back. We waited there for a while and around the 10 minute mark and the crate disappeared.
