Project Arid is a community project. We create models for rust based on suggestions or our own ideas.
We are currently 3 people: Eric_Jedi, Xoia, Stym

Anyone can join as long as you want to contribute to the game and have a basic knowledge of creating assets.
This project was also created to support each other and give feedback and helpful tips on how to create game assets for unity.
We work with a lot of different tools (Blender,Max,Ps,Gimp etc.).

There is no reward other than the satisfaction of supporting the development of this game, and the experience that comes with the project itself.

Please take requests to the "new building parts" thread, we will consider the suggestions made there!

Clicking the thumbnail opens up a large version of the assets.
Clicking the link underneath will open up the game administrator to vote on the items and read about the functionalities.

    Last Update: 28.03.2014

Edit:\ Since the game admin page is being reworked I will wait with updating the models etc in the editor until its at a stable state so I don't have to redo it over and over! =)
    ________________________________________

    Dynamite Weapon/Explosive
A replacement to the current c4 in a more rusty style. Would require leather (waterproof binding) duct tape (also added to the item list) and gunpowder.
As a unique feature this might be highly instable - making it a risk to use (e.g. different times until explosion from 5-15s)

    Camping stove Portable Campfire
The camping stove can be seen as an advanced campfire for lategame travels. It is non craftable (only lootdrop) and might be refillable if gas is introduced.
Due to the efficiency food is cooked faster and the small flames dont light the area as much as a campfire at night.

    Flashlight Tool
The flashlight lasts longer than the torch and does not make sounds. Furthermore the light dispersion is directed to a spot,
so that you wont have a glowing light around you and thus you are harder to spot.

    Can Opener Tool
A can opener that can also be used as a basic melee weapon. It is used to open cans, which is a food resource that doesn't spoil as fast.

    Can Consumeable
Cans don't spoil but they are rather heavy to carry. They should not be eaten without being cooked first. If they are opened with something that is not sharp
(e.g. a stone) they will lose durability and also might harm you as metal shards might have been splintered.

    ______________

All of these models are low poly and ready to use ingame. Texture size is high so it can be scaled down still.

Hahaha <3 Nice to be back. I just waited for this editor - its not much I've done yet but when Eric gets started and I get a good workflow we might contribute a lot to the game. At least thats what I hope!

    awesome work, good luck.
    Thank you sir! :)

Hunting Spear looks amazing! I would love to throw a giant sharp stick into my enemy's heart!
Hahhaha thanks! For now I thought about it as a melee thing - but you could add a "right-click" throw of some sorts or similar! =) We also planned other levels of spears - like a wooden / stone one etc.

    edit:\

btw I know its not much for now - but I wanted to get the project public as fast as possible so people can join early. :) If you want to join but your knowledge about 3D stuff isn't that great just contact me - we can work on it. I'm not really experienced at this either.

When I put the workbench and repair bench side by side, sharing the same end legs, it looks just like the level 2. Either way, the items look amazing. I just went over the other thread, awesome stuff.

Thanks ! =) Yeah I believe the current repair-bench model is just a placeholder - a copy of the workbench a little bit modified for testing purpose.

Yes I hope so too =) I don't know if the quality is high enough for the game but if not I will try to improve wherever I can. I tried to keep the polycount very low - which leads to less quality of course.

Nah don't flame them. Tom and Dan are doing an amazing job - they just have so much stuff to do. They need to replace all the placeholders etc. before they can even start doing new assets.
They do hire as well - it just seems as if noone met the standards yet. I expect a newspost pretty soon again. I believe they just didn't want another post with the title "updateless week" probably. :)

    Vote seems not working :/
Oh well, we can't change that now I guess - but since the editor isn't final yet anyway I guess votes might be resetted even. The models are done and can be reuploaded anytime if something changes.

Okay Eric started working as well- We will revisit all these models here - they were just first ideas on things we could add. They will certainly change.

Hey Stym, I love your work! (I have even tried to tweet at Garry to hire you.) Anyways, I think you should add some tools to the workbench to make it look a little more used. Also, I think a Crafting Table, Repair Bench together would be kinda cool, you could craft faster and repair at the same place instead of having to always do both separately!

Anyway, thats all I have to say for now, but seriously, amazing work and I hope one day you get hired by FP. Good Luck!

(BTW, I think you should add to the main post that people can click on the links under the photo's to upvote it so it has a higher chance of getting in the game.)

I'm sorry I can't really understand your english, but what I mean is that at different levels of crafting tables can be different perks. Say the little crafting table now has a 20% decrease in craft time or something, Level 2 could have 40% decrease. And then as levels go on you unlock perks like at level 3 you could repair stuff there without a repair bench, Level 4 could be a 60% decrease in craft time, Level 5 could be items have 50 % more durability when crafted there, and Level 6 could be something like you can research items very slowly without a blueprint (End game of course.)

If you read my comment above you know that it would still be the case until end game. There would still be furnaces, plus maybe you could level up the repair bench for more effectiveness with repairing stuff.

Its no longer a single community member :P We are 3 Guys making assets atm- we want to finish our asset list first before we publish them though (we work on small theme based items, and after we made about 10 roughly we will publish them). Haha sure just tell me what you want maybe we can include it to the list mate ! =)

I applied - didn't get taken and thats it I guess :P But thanks anyway mate. We are working hard atm to get good assets. Just a sneak peak at what sort of stuff I created for the current group project.

To that "add more tools" I added a comment in the game admin page - the tools should be the same as ingame so I didn't add them but they should if they add the bench ( I will probably take the links of these example thingies out once we finished our first set of items! )

On the cooking hearth, you should have the mesh attach to the vertices as a whole object, makes exporting and wrapping UV much easier, also helps in optimizations.

Unsure if you noticed that, but I thought I'd point it out. :)

Perhaps you could make some rooftops, that would provide nice aesthetics and have a physical purpose. I like the your ladders, perhaps a ceiling with a hatchtop, above the ladder would be a cool addition.

Thanks for the feedback. :) It will be redone anyway - this one was just quick as stated above , all the models are just "placeholders" I did before we started the project really. I didn't do high poly bakes for these yet so they look rather flat.

Yeah its on the list, the Issue is that We 1. don't have the sizes of the original walls etc. so its hard to adjust to the "geometry" of the models and 2. we don't know what art style will be present for the walls once they are redone (e.g. dark wood, bark, planks) so we focus more on interactive items atm.
I hope we can push out our first wave of items this weekend.

That would be very Heart to do (PUN INTENT)

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah its those cylindrical shapes :D But as said above we are redoing the models later - the thing from the roof applies here as well - it should use the bark textures of the future trees so its hard to include it now. Doesn't make any sense to again put placeholder content into the game just to please people that don't understand what alphas are about :S I will replace the item list once the team agreed upon publishing their items [when they are happy with them :D ]

As mentioned before : We focus on small tools etc. atm as we don't know what direction fp will take with buildings in general.

You can always just contact me or the others - we are all only doing this for fun, everyone with a basic understanding of asset creation may join =) I won't have much time soon either - maybe 1-2 items a week or even less, but thats cool as long as people contribute!

Hey Stym, just to let you know, Garry posted a dev blog on playrust.com and at the very end it says "If you are awesome hit us up!" Well, I know you already applied, but I think you should apply again now that they are actually looking into hiring more people. Again amazing work keep it up.

Ah yes I read that, thanks mate =) I won't reapply - I applied as a community / PR guy since I saw the necessity for it and still do, but it seems Garry doesn't need/want one.
I never applied as a 3D modeler as my skills are not even close to those of Dan and Tom's - I will go with this project a bit , support the game and the devs this way, and see how it evolves. I can't even invest a lot of time soon since uni is gonna start again - so I hope this project will contribute a bit to the game. If the items will never be taken we will probably just hand them out as free downloads on the unity asset store or smth.

Hey ! Glad you guys are loving all the work. Stym started the boat, and I am glad to come aboard and help him out (and Xoia). We will come up with more cool stuff for everyone in the community. The list has become very big... everyone wants different assets, so we are trying to go by theme. We will keep you guys updated, as we are all busy with our own jobs hehe. Again, thank you everyone for the support. Do not hesitate if you have any questions.
