One of the biggest parts of rust would be the gun play. You cannot walk any where on the rust island without at least hearing a gun shot and ducking in to the nearest piece of cover you can find.
If the weapon system is a big contributing factor to the rust world why not improve upon it?
In my opinion the weapon models could be changed a little bit, Im not saying change the complete model but improve upon it, Many FPS games in the past have had a high poly weapon local model(The weapon that is in your hands) and a low poly world model(what you see on other people), Obviously the biggest issue with that is, all pistols look the same(world model) And all rifles look the same (world model), This of course would have to be fixed first. What i suggest is following the leading FPS of the gaming industry and create high poly weapons for local models and low poly models for world models, you would also need to update the textures to fit the new models.
[Please note that i have not created these models that have been taken from Google images. I do not own these models they have been made and posted by others.]

Another thing that i would like to see improved is the attachments not only the amount of attachments but the visibility of the attachments. I find it extremely unimmersive if i have a flash light or a laser equipped but i can not see them attached, you could also try and implement these to the world models but its not that big of a thing to worry about.
This of attachments i would like to see.
-More Scopes such as 12x , 6x ETC. You could have 1 hunting scope or something like that which increases your zoom by x2, this can be attached to any weapon.
-Extended clips, In a couple of fire fights you may run out of ammo at the worst time, with this you will have extra bullets in the chamber. Also can be attached to any weapon, (exception revolver, pipe shotgun .etc)
-Handle Grips/stock reinforcement, This attachment would decrease the recoil of any weapon it is attached to.
- Many more attachments could be added to the game without being to overkill.

last but not least would be the hunting bow, The hunting bow is another frequent used an could have multiple improvements. The first thing of the bow would be the model of the hunting bow, The bow it self looks very ugly and impracticable.
The second improvement that could be made upon the hunting bow is the aiming, It does take abit to learn how to use and where to aim with the hunting bow, however in a real situation of tradional archery the bow string is pulled to the cheek of the character not the shoulder, If you were to rotate the hunting bow and move it towards the center of the screen slightly to the point where you should be able to look at the tip of the arrow (most IRL shooters do this). This would increase the immersion and practicality of the weapon.
The following picture are only suggestions. The second image is just a little quick suggestion that has been thrown in and this is the ability to make a refined hunting bow, by going to a crafting bench with some cloth,metal frags ETC you can increase the look and power of the hunting bow.
The hunting bow could be changed to something along the lines of this bow.
