    I propose the following variants:

    1) Genetically engineered creatures, that broke away from some laboratory. The creatures were created as a part of experiment to make artificial servants. Maybe they even were mass produced and distributed in cities, then one day they rebelled and wiped out majority of humans. This can explain the catastroph that brought down civilization. Or some other catastroph destroyed civilization first and creatures became wild in a years when no humans controled them. The creatures are humanoid in form with low intelligence, but capable of making and using primitive weapons and tools. Can look like neanderthals or something similar. Live in tribes and are extremely hostile towards humans. Creatures tribes live in caves, abandoned mines or cities ruins. Some hunt and scout in countryside where players are.

    2) Alien nonsentient crearures.
The creatures spores or larvas were brought on Earth with a meteorite. The alien creatures are collective swarm creatures, like zergs. But they shouldn't be all the size of a man, only soldires. They can be insectlike or like creatures from Lost Planet. They evolve and adapt rapidly and there are many types of them, like ants sociobiological types: larvas, workers, soldiers, queens and others. Workers collect food and/or materials, soldires come to protect them and guard nests. These creatures can be use to explain the catastroph as well.

    3) Robotic weapons like the one in the movie "Screamers": autonomous mobile swords.

    http://grizzlybomb.com/wp-content/up..._technisch.jpg

Not humanoid like but something simular to ones on pictures above. It can be not only swords but mines also. And some spider like robots with cutters as well.
These robots were developed instead of mines to be used in a future war. Either they were spread out by some enemy nation, or went out of control as a consequence of the catastroph, that destroyed civilization or they themselves are the cause of the catastroph, but now they plague the area.

    4) Humans who are controlled by parasite alien puppeteers, that are attached to their backs.
Once the infested person is killed the parasite tries to jump on the player and turn him into its host.
The parasites have relatively low intelligence so their hosts can't use or produce advanced weapons, only melee ones.

Well i'm for dinausaurs, but if you do that, remove hand guns and let's go over a prehistoric time game, remove radiations, a game wich take place at the beginning of the humanity, it sound good!
With some improvements for the melee fighting, a bit like mount and blade where you can counter, slipping and choose the side you want to hit, combine this with more old ranged weapons (bow, throwing knife, sling shot, spear..)
I'm serious it could be great, ranged fight doesnt need to be with guns..

I think rust is popular BECAUSE it's a survival game with guns. Taking guns right out would be catastrophic in my opinion.

i think dinosaurs would be stupid. robots or aliens fit in better with the whole radiation thing plus with robots and aliens you could add in some really cool drops like alien armor or weapons or something that you cant research and are very rare. and i feel like military would be a lot more difficult from a development stand point although it would kind of make sense just to have them occupy rad towns or something. either way, i hate wolves more than i hate hackers in this game and they need to go.

    Dinosaurs for me, yep!
Imagine, a Stegosaurus is minding its own business and all of a sudden an Allosaurus Fragilis attacks the Stegosaur! After eating the Stegosaurus the Allosaurus notices you, than chases you all over!

Not implying stegosaurs or allosaurus will be in rust.

Is there a way to avoid this kind of thing completely? As in, why does there need to be a zombie apocalypse or mutants or whatever. What I am most attracted to in Rust is the survival aspect and the PvP aspect. Could it be that that is what Rust is all about? Obviously there would need to other types of additions to make the game deep enough. Other ways of obtaining loot similar to airdrops or completing tasks, some way to safely set up and run a trading post if you want to go that route, a greater variety of farmable items leftover in towns. So far there isn't much to do in the game except farm the same few resources, build the same buildings, and raid other players. I believe if a larger variety of resources are added, more craftable items that allow for other types of gameplay (like fishing for example), skills that take many blueprints or some new item like a training manual to achieve (like like engineering/auto mechanics to build vehicles for example), and extremely expensive items like vehicles to have more to work towards, will all encourage even more emergent gameplay that Rust has so far generated. The tagline that got me to buy the game originally was "The only aim in Rust is to survive." I didn't buy it because it was another zombie game. There could be more natural dangers added like snakes, illnesses/infections, extreme weather, etc. A greater variety of structural components and defense mechanisms. I don't really know where I'm going with this to be honest but I really can't think of anything that the red animals are actually a placeholder for that would be any kind of improvement. Just get rid of them and make the world more interesting in general to live in, survive in, and make friends or enemies in. Make Rust take place after the zombie apocalypse is over, after the pandemic is over or whatever. Now it's time to rebuild and survive.

I think you should found a right compromise of (Mutant) Military/Humans + Animals with some rare appearence of giant creature( as dinasoar or mythical creature, o robot)....
I CAN'T vote one of this things...

I don't know what can be the right choice(imho will be what YOU choice in the end),
but i think is necessary to have a diverse pool of options, that can deepen the game xperience, creating different situation to be handled by the users.

    - "A giants is walking around the island"
    - "An horde of chickens werewolves is attacking all building during the night"
    - "the much acclaimed helicopter is looking for someone"
    - a group of soldiers is dealing with "big Civillian"
    - A virus is carried by birds ifnestando the island

    Facepunch Guy's ...
for the first time we are playing a game that seems to be the closest thing to a "limitless game" ... continue on this line...

We would probably need a new map that will suit new NPC's in the game Like a big town with a lot of buildings where these "Mythical Creatures" jump on you from around the corner of a room you really dont want to go in. That will be quite spoopy

The mythical stuff is just a terrible terrible idea, lol. Basically if our choice is anything, or mythical, I choose anything else. Mythical does not fit in any form or fashion.

I stand by my mutant military idea + adding small tented camps around broken radioative material canisters off of the path in various areas, to extend the map out (a large server setting).

I really don't understand the appeal to dinosaurs nor where that idea is coming from. Where is it coming from? Implementation of dinosaurs would be a serious buckshot to the foot.

Here is the real question that must be addressed from a development standpoint:
What do the mobs (regardless of their skin, appearance, etc.) add to the game and what function do they serve.

As of right now the red mobs serve as single pull loot sacks. They force an expenditure of ammunition and durability to force a risk/reward trade off (Do I spend my ammo, and risk being killed to get what they drop). Right now, that's a null factor. The mobs are not linked, and 5 minutes of killing red mobs outside big rad will yield FAR more ammo than is spent killing them. In essence, they are similar (obviously loot tables might be slightly different) to boxes inside rad zones.

Their range right now is limited to specific areas. So, unless you are running blind through Big Rad, they, on their own, pose little risk to players. Frankly a lone regular wolf in the woods is more dangerous than 10 red mobs outside split rad.

This obviously could be a function of the game being an Alpha, with roaming/linked mobs soon to come.

Debating what the red mobs should be is frankly Step #1204 and this game is on Step#40

What should be discussed is IF mobs are going to be included, what unique choice do they present that is different than other choices.
    For example:
Loot box vs Rads - You must either hope you can loot fast enough before the rads kill you, or hope you come across some rad pills. Obviously in some cases this is moot, and in my opinion, loot in those circumstances should be balanced accordingly. Again, its an alpha
Base near Civs/Resources vs Wastelands - Availability and reduced travel time benefit but high risk of player interference
Go after airdrop vs Leave it be - High reward versus massive PvP risk

At this point, the red mobs are more "flavor" than actual gameplay. And until they settle on the canon (whatever you want to call it) of the world. Whatever "skin" they pick is ancillary.

So what is to be done?
Determine how the mobs can alter gameplay choices.

Creepers in Minecraft are a perfect example of this. As much as you may hate them, they provide amazing impact to gameplay versus most other mobs that are simply loot/experience sacks with teeth. They force choices and shape decisions on how to build a base/to explore that cave/to go out at night/etc.

In essence, right now, the red mobs could disappear and the only real impact on gameplay would be 40 fewer loot sacks in the world.

I agree with the decision for no zombies. I think at this point its a lazy design decision. As for dinosaurs, what's the difference between a dinosaur and a red bear? If they both drop the same loot, both damage your health if you get close, and require ammo to kill, then they are the same (albeit slightly more awesome looking) mob.

So, if you ask me, I think what we should be coming up with is ideas for mobs that create interesting choices and alter the dynamic of the game. After that, we can decide what to dress them up in.

Really? Dinosaurs? I'm just trying to think of one good game involving Dinos. I suppose there's enough reason to break the mould, but won't it also break the game?

It's called Rust, hopefully for a reason. I'd like to see the environment become a greater challenge and further updates to increase the types of outdoor obstacles a player must face. Balancing player ability with environmental disability is the key to keeping things enjoyable and challenging.

I like this game because there is no rules, no lobby and no points system. You choose how to play, who to play with, and the community at large decides whether or not you are successful. That's close to perfect for me, and I'll keep playing as long as this remains the at the core of the game.

If Facepunch was EA, you'd have an update with Gun Toting Mutant Dinos (that you could ride on) downloading right now.

Tbh, should have left zombies in if you were planning on spending the next 3 months working on a new ui/farming. Three servers have died in the last few weeks because there is nothing to do, i'm done looking for a new one.
I'm gonna check back next year and hope you actually got something done.

The two burning issues right now appear to be hackers and what to replace Z's with.

For everyone asking for bandits and military, you must realise this could mean AI entities with ESP, varying levels of Aimbot and extrahuman abilities such as nofalldamage/invisibility/camouflage/fly/jump. Ok, they can be killed, but so can hackers.

If I was making this game then I'd be pretty confused as to what my audience wants, and probably just continue creating and balancing a decent environment to survive in. Make wolves cleverer, bears stronger, or whatever. It's working right now.

Militairy because it opens a lot of possibilities for content.
Convoys on the roads that you could try to raid with high risk high reward.
Militairy invasion with a high enough population count, militairy coming to your base and you have to fend them of or they try to c4 your base.
Traps to fend of not just enemy players but also the invasion trying to raid your base.
Mobs with guns are more dangerous then mobs that only melee.
Airdrops would make a lot more sense.
Modern weapons would make a lot more sense.
Militairy in civ areas would make a lot more sense.

Can post plenty of other ideas but you get the point.
For getting more content and making a lot of sense, militairy is the best choice.

Variety is the spice of life. Raiders, mutants, hostile animals, some kind of major, tough to kill enemy would be cool too. The variety of AI in like the Fallout 3/New Vegas Wasteland comes to mind, only with higher density spawns and not the same exact monsters. Just some variety would be nice. All in due time, of course.

Here's an idea: what about having everything? so many creatures that you have no idea what you'll encounter next.

bees, fairies, dogs, elephants, floating brains, etc.

    mutant penises

essentially the testicles would be the legs and it would scoot back and forth to walk, the attack animation would be the penis bending and thrusting towards you, striking you (people can pretend in their heads that the penis is penetrating them). It makes sense that naked people would take more damage from the attacks as there's less resistance to entering them. Cloth is meh penetratable, leather would stop a penis (not a mutant one though) and kevlar would be much more difficult for a mutant penis to penetrate.

these enemies could be more appropriately termed "helmet heads"

kind of like a zombie when a person dies from a helmet head they become infected like aids and their penises inflame and enlarge and eventually amputate off as their own being

I think really any type of mutants would be fun. Maybe giant radiation spiders that come out at night. Or like something Metro 2033 themed-ish. Mutant animals or humans would be interesting in my opinion.

Also military would be my close second. Problem then would be determining the way they fight. If they all have guns it wouldn't be very moderate play friendly. Hard core players would camp them for guns all day. I think making them melee mutants ala Fallout Ghouls would be ok. But at that point really whats the difference between them and zombies?

Dinosaurs and military are not going to be added. Here is a quote from Garry:

Yeah this goes without saying. We're not letting the community dictate what we do. We're feeling them out about stuff. The actual reason for that poll wasn't for them to decide whether military or dinosaurs should get added. It was to feel people out about something else on the list.

How original would dinosaurs make this game! A totally new challenge that nobody yet experienced in the survival games genre, well maybe some raptors on the hardest difficulty in Stranded 2 but that's old. This would make this game even more interesting than it is now, this game really does look like it is a balance between cavemen with bows, cloth armors etc. that live a peaceful life and the new world guys with bad-ass guns and armors that bring nothing but death.
