So do robots, and mutated animals?
So when was the last time robots and mutated stuff were killing living stuff in masses to survive?

eh the backpack isn't really a good reason for mutants or military, but i do agree that dinos would be somewhat of an odd/bad idea.

I say military, but they have to be rare, and their AI has to be good. Not good as in auto-aim assholes, but also not sprint at you firing. Something interesting. Guess it would be a lot harder to code than a zombie though.

I think in order to figure out what should replace zombies (if they actually need to be replaced), we need to know more about the world we are immersing ourselves in. What's up with all the radiation? Who is making air drops and who is the intended recipient? It seems to me a post-nuclear event/war makes the most sense for the game's backdrop and as such we need to think about what one would encounter in that world; be it zombies, military/militia (foreign or domestic), mutants, etc.

Personally I'd quite like to see Dinosaurs, perhaps something similar to the old Jurassic Park Trespasser game. Ah.. Those were the days, it's a shame the survival genre is now over-populated with generic Military/Zombie games.

Dinosaurs would be fucking amazing. Especially if a few of them were so large that they couldn't be taken down by one man alone. Forcing players into a situation where they will need to cooperate would be a very cool thing.

I'd prefer the military to dinosaurs, and not just because there are a number of upcoming dinosaur related games. That being said, if dinosaurs would be set up in such a way that they would destroy parts of player made structures, or at least do damage to them speeding up their degradation and necessitating repairs I could see them being a very viable replacement that also meant that they would act as a force for entropy and clear servers of empty structures faster than time alone.

Maybe instead of worrying about a new variable you just make it to where the current ones are more dynamic. Like a animal realism AI where bears lurk near sources of water and in places with high foliage. Wolves hunt in packs, against deer and players. Boar move, migrate, and live in small families. Animals having more life to them would be a lot better than some new super monster. Wolves hunting in packs would be enough to even the odds.

Agreed. And I'd love to see more animal variety if possible... birds, foxes, rodents, maybe even reptiles and eventually fish. I don't think the game needs mythical creatures.

You know what might be actually kind of cool is being able to tame/domesticate some animals.. or at least dogs and cats etc. You could feed them, put a backpack on them.. have them carry items for you (dog backpacks). The dogs could help protect you during fights and follow you.

Cats could bring back small rodents for you etc.

Carrier pigeons. Send messages to friends over long distances by attaching notes.

i cant vote, as several things interest me.

has anyone ever went to the peak of the mountain? the map is huge, having millatary bases with millatary weapons, ammo, kevlar, vehicles, etc. small tribes dot the land, and any animals that stay in a radiated zone to long get turned to mutant ones, with poisonous loot.

also, if the map is as big as it looks, i would like to see a server with 500+ people on it, if it is possible, and some support for groups, but it is alpha after all, so i would suggest regular animals that turn to mutants.

tL,DR: mutants for now, millatary and tribes later

I like the idea of both Mutants/Monsters and Military. My idea is that the island is/was used as a testing ground for a military. They created some monsters (that hunt people) which is what caused the original inhabitants civilization to fall. The players (US) are survivors from that incident, or maybe survivors of a plane crash on the island. A new military outfit is coming to cover up (cover up) the problem. The military is a threat to you and the monster, as is the monsters to you and the military. The military wants you dead because if you survive their secret will get out. There could be random events where monster hoards pop up and attack military outfits and players camps. You can either join the monster side and kill the military or join the military to kill the monsters, or avoid situations all together.

Quit voting for military its been done way too many times, if you want military go play cod or arma.

I'm Thinking Aliens(not like halo or some shit like that) im talking like grey aliens, It could fit into the story, like we are all abductee's being kept on this island. Dinosaurs would be legit as well.
No way Aliens man. Too much sci fi rubbish.

Yup military is crap, but I get the feel many people voted just to try and beat dinosaurs.

    Edited:

Military is too....sophisticated. I'd call tribes and/or mutant animals. Dinos would be ok, but unrealistic. Maybe on certain areas of the map. I wouldn't want dinosaurs, but no aliens or robots etc.

The ideas are great. The problem is creating a world where it is free for the players to make decisions that have rewards and consequences. Implementing a pre-designed idea takes away from that. The zombies provided us a way to take out aggression and recieve a reward with loot. Creating the idea of placing dinosaurs where zombies once stood makes no difference to bettering the objective of the game itself. We would just like to see large ASSS dinos roam the earth again. I agree it would be epic. There are enough hardships that exist in reality that can be made a fictional one within this game. I hope you explore this with ideas that may venture towards earthquakes, floods, tornados, thunderstorms, physics from these disasters. Player on Player is dangerous in its own right. With this said, having a bandit NPC would be cool. But that leads to many issues that may not be wanted by many.
Exploring the environment can lead to different ideas, exploring the players can also create new ideas, factions within a map based on Environments, deals, betrayal. We are seeing plenty of effort to better the game with mods, so implementing things such as military, dinos, or any other NPC may give something to the game, but it will take more away from the freedom. Provide more for us to invent new ways within the game to make it great.

Okay I voted Mutant animals, but would also approve of mutant humans, and to a slightly lesser degree dinosaurs (let me explain why!)

The truth is the question is not an easy one and will have a variety of answers depending on subjective individual ideas about the overall plot, theme and direction of the game. So now will follow some of my ideas for the above and how you could combine several of these replacement ideas into a coherent game design.

Firstly, the radiation. I understand it may be removed in future but this was one of the highlights for me early on. I hope it gets kept but the mechanics are altered significantly - The removal of the in skull geiger counter would make it more intimidating over a longer period. The really scary thing about radiation is that you can not sense it, at all. You could receive several hundred times a lethal dose in a few seconds (were you to hold in your hand a piece of the graphite moderator from Chernobyl reactor No. 4 for example) and not sense the slightest thing until a few hours later. In terms of game mechanics, a dosimeter or geiger counter could be rare loot drops, in the medical crates etc. that would give players the visual (dosimeter) and the audible (geiger counter) warnings about the radiation. There could also be a fatal limit once passed death becomes inevitable.

Obviously radiation is mutagenic, damaging to DNA and encouraging mutations in cells - hence the mutant animals and humans as nasties, now where do the dinosaurs come into it? Well, a dinosaur like T.Rex was basically a giant carnivorous chicken, feathers and all (as far as we know). So somewhere between a T.Rex and a giant mutated chicken and you have the perfect RUST nasty. Lethal, scary and vaguely comical all at once!

To add to the idea about dinosaurs we know that 65 million years ago the Earth was much warmer enabling the great cold blooded lizards to achieve great sizes, also insects and arachnids were able to grow much larger due to the much higher proportion of oxygen in the atmosphere. So maybe as global warming increased, so too did the size of lizards, as humans died out more plants produced more oxygen allowing insects and spiders to grow larger, plus the radiation from the man made catastrophe caused rapid mutation driving evolution to throw up many kinds of mutant animal/dinosaur/giant insects to compete in the new environment with the other survivors.

    Just some more ideas ;)

Well the idea of mutants and aliens is kinda boring why not like an airborne disease or something where one has to wear a gas mask and find new air canisters? I like the idea of concealed air tight bases with expensive disease scanning devices that dont hesitate you blow the infected's heads off.
    Military kinda thing ya know.

65 million years? But the Trinity Broadcast Network told me the Earth is only 5000 years old.

    Okay okay, anyway.

I still think military should exist and be rare, like a recon team or possibly an assault squad. You could even see them get helo dropped in and they would drop sweet loot yet be very difficult to kill.

But this would take a LOT of work I fear, as military AI would require a lot of programming unless you went the lazy "just run around shooting without fear of cover". Shooter AI is difficult, and this game seems to have no AI.

Im giving another vote to tribal natives! And to add to the suggestion, I say get rid of rads also. Instead, maybe put some airborn condition near where the tribal people are. Maybe some type of smoke that the tribes burn at their bases (which would replace abandoned military bases), or maybe there is a disease that the tribe is immune to but you cant stay exposed to the infected tribesman for an extended period of time? Just spitballing, but I think that if facepunch really wants to separate the game from day z (which I totally support!), the rads might need to go.
