I agree. The game is pretty unplayable right now with the amount of hackers. Even if its in alpha, the game is not really enjoyable for the legit players... I'm going to take a break from ridiculous rust!.
They never envisioned that they would sell over a million copies of this game....EVER. Let alone in the first month and a half of sales. I think they are surprised by the popularity and if they had known it would take off like this then they would have spent more time patching exploitable holes in their game code. With so many different avenues available to the hacker, it's tough to write an algorithm to detect the hacks that won't completely bog down communications between the client and the server. The idea is to plug what you can in the code and then apply the anti-cheats as a stopgap measure until you can pinpoint every last piece of vulnerable code.
The downside is, they need these hackers to show them where the holes are. If all the hackers are banned immediately, then they have less data available to quash those exploits. Rest assured that they are observing and collecting data on these hacks to try and make them impossible to pull off in the first place rather than just having an after-the-fact ban in place, lost player time, and server roll backs.
Most important thing if you are going to play a game in an early state and in active development is to be patient.
"I'm going to take a break from ridiculous rust!."
Great idea! See you when you get back and things are back to normal around here. :)
