I think the color needs to go back to yellow. It's really hard to see against the sky. We had a lot of trouble getting the names of people speedhacking last night, because they were jumping from rock to rock and you have to look up at them. The name with the sky on the background is virtually impossible to see.

garry nailed it on the head. you should have to be aiming AT someone before their name appears. so you would have to spot someone in the tall grass before you can see a name.
He said 'looking at' not 'aiming at'. I assume looking at means putting them somewhere near the middle of your view. Having to bring up a gun scope to look at a name would make it more tense than it needs to be.

expect this to change, it was a quick mod. I think they should think about adding names when your mouse over a player. So by highlights only.

There is no mouseover, when not in inventory, so I assume you mean when you point at them. Pointing your gun, rock, whatever at them, is exactly what everyone is suggesting.

Also the ability to possibly change the color of armor or put some differentiating aspect to it would be nice to have down the road. Currently when your running with a friend or two and your all naked or have all kev, and run into another group with the same stuff equipped, it gets a little hard to figure out who's who once you get into the fire fight :P

However this is very low on the request list, just an idea and I think this has been talked about loosely by Garry.

They need to make the name disappear when you're an admin, in full invisible gear, and are trying to investigate a hacker. It makes it completely pointless that they can now see your name from a mile away even though you're invisible.
It would be nice if Admins (RCON) would be able to disable this for themselves so they can observe players while invisible.
I cannot agree more with these two, admins should have the option to turn off nametags for the whole server or for just admins. Although hackers will still see you with ESP it would make adminning so much easier so investigating someone wont interfere with gameplay (freaking someone out seeing an invisible person with a nametag).

We can make them only show when you're looking at players if that's what everyone would prefer. I definitely see the point about seeing players coming, seeing in long grass etc.
I believe this would be the best way to go over the nametag system that is currently in place.

I think Garry's suggestion is ok - but would prefer that at night, it is actually harder to read them somehow... I think that's the original main point of the thread that is still erking me.

I understand people's opinions on enjoying the aspect of not knowing who is friend or foe, but at a certain point, when the most common phrase on VOIP is "jump if you're friendly", it's just annoying and I hope they at least come up with a way to dye armor if the general consensus is really against any form of disabling friendly fire or always seeing friend's nametags.

A less obtrusive way would be to do what Battlefield does, put a little dot/triangle or "dorito" above friendly players heads and only show nametag when close/in focus.

The dye thing sounds good but then you'll have groups intentionally copying other people's gear for confusion during raids (I'm not really saying that's good or bad but it'll happen)

And dying would be useless, since after a while everyone will dye their gear in "camo" colours like black for night and green/beige for the day.

I thought this was a pretty major issue when I realised I could see a guys name from far away when I was ducked in the long grass.

Then someone informed me everyone has just turned grass off entirely using some command which was an even bigger problem imho.

Survival games shouldnt have floating names or options to turn of grass so they can see people who think.they are hiding in it.

EDIT: Really bad typo on ducked... :O

Please, oh please turn name tag off when logged in as an admin. Footsteps too. Even if it's temporary until you implement a spectator mode.

I would like to only see a name above someone who is in a 10-degree cone in front of you, and only if they remain in that cone for more than 1.5 seconds.

I would also like some sort of mechanic that if you /addfriend someone, and they do the same to you, then from that moment on, any time you see that player, even outside the "name cone" their player model will have a colored bandana around their arm, marking them as friendly. Thus, it would still be difficult to spot friend or foe from a distance, but up close you could tell, even before you see the name appear.

Why not create a looking glass recipe for crafting and if you want to identify a player from afar you have to take out and use your looking glass on him? Takes care of the "always aim down sight" argument and is a good way to explain the game mechanic in terms of immersion. Just a thought.

Make it where you can only see their names if they are in light. So if it is night or they are in a shadow you cannot see their name.
Also make it where you have to be close (~5 Feet) to the player to actually see their name.

    Edit:
Also with this friends list thing. This is not minecraft, this is Rust. Adding a friends list is like asking for the nerf of C4, Dumb.

One thing I wish the game could improve on is some kind of a buddy system. I constantly see this in Rust YouTube and other stream videos - a person is in a massive gun fight, and is asking for assistance from friends. The friend starts getting closer to the person, and the person either shoots them by accident, or has to constantly ask them if they're his friend. Part of this issue is not being able to see your friend's name from a certain distance, and the other is that everyone looks the same.

The modded servers have some ways of dealing with this through a /group system.

I personally think if we kept the new nametag look+ distance, but added in the old style stare at them for a few seconds to get the nametag, maybe the further they are the longer you have to stare at them (up to a point of course) would be nice.

I agree. Me and my teammates like to screw around with eachother, like set a few grenades off in our base and say, "That wasn't me dude, I'm out gathering!!" then have fun firefights.

Tried to do it to my buddy Code yesterday... He could see my name thru a wall and called me out.

We still had a fun firefight... But its just not the same.

IMO, namees should not be always visible. The ability to use the game environment to hide, use stealth and evade should be preserved.

Indeed. The only time I think you should be able to see someone else's name tag, is if you're looking straight at them and they're within 5 feet of you.
