No more hiding in grass or in the darkness, now you can just see people's names floating above them regardless of if you are actually aiming at them. In pitch black you can even just fire under people's names to kill them. Hackers with night vision will use this as an excuse to more easily get away with using night vision, "I just shot under your name". This damages the game's element of surprise and stealth ability. It was better how it was previously, in my opinion, and perhaps could have benefited from simply widening the cone of sight for reading names by a couple degrees.

I see where they were going with these nametags, but they seriously hinder any ability to sneak up on anybody in the darkness. All you see is a floating text.

True, good to point this out.

I'm sure they will be fixing it soon.

I like the new tags, maybe if they just showed the names when you are pointing at them or within a certain proximity.

    Proposal:

Make it so that the text darkens with daytime. When crouched, your name should be much less visible as well.

When did this happen? I played last night, and the name thing was same as normal, is this maby not an oxide or some sort of plugin? Just curious.

I personally really like the new name tags, Would maybe be an idea to have name-tags of people in your friends list more visible and name-tags of others like they used to be (you had to be within a few meters before they appear)? I think the less visible idea when crouched is a good one, would certainly help with sneaking.

They should add a friend list that provides more visibility to friendly. I have only seen this in servers with the rust++ mod on it but it really does not add anything of value to the friends part.
Besides that people who are not friends should not be easy visible. Excuse my english.

Make the feature friend only. problem solved, also agree that this change sucks since you can see ppl through walls just by name.

The tag itself stand out more, but does anyone else find the text even harder to read? I find myself having to get up closer to read a name despite the tag being more noticeable. I don't know if it's the font or the white contrast, both, or what.

Maybe make it toggle on once you are close enough. Then it stays on till out of some max range and toggles off.

Ya i hate the new name plates. Its a good idea but done really wrong! It looks terrible when running and makes it impossible to hide anywhere now. I hope they see this thread and change it back!

yeah the current state is awful. so much less tension.. i can understand that people wanted to be able to easily identify friends but this was not the way to go. on a small server it completely destroys atmosphere as well.

You can also see the names THROUGH walls. IT should be to where you have to stare at a player for a second or two before their name shows up.

They looked nice, but lead to issues when I was trying to follow a hacker on my server(with invis gear), now i am invisible with my name floating for him to see at all times, luckily he speedhacked away and gave me the proof i needed.

The font is hard to read when it gets smaller, and I agree it shouldn't show up through walls and quite so easily. I'd like to see some system to add friends and a different hitsound for when you shoot a friend so that you don't have to constantly ask if some1 you see is a friend on voice. Maybe just a different shading on the player models for people you add to a friends list would suffice, a blue hue or something?

If there was a way to actually tell friend from foe in a battle I would say make the name plates vanish within a set view distance... but until we can tell friend from foe I say leave name plates highly visible.

If there was a group / guild option that made name plates viewable from even farther that would be nice.

Based on previous comments by Garry, I don't believe they would ever add artificial visual cues to differentiate 'friends'. While it does make it difficult now, they have also talked about eventually adding ways to make the differentiation using game mechanics like being able to dye materials.

Being able to see names through obstructions (walls, etc.) and the font/color making it somewhat difficult to read are the big problems I see.

They need to make the name disappear when you're an admin, in full invisible gear, and are trying to investigate a hacker. It makes it completely pointless that they can now see your name from a mile away even though you're invisible.

I only care about the fact that I lost the ability to sneak after possible cheaters as an admin in my invisible armor.

While we're at it, might as well remove the sound of footsteps while being in invis. armor.

We can make them only show when you're looking at players if that's what everyone would prefer. I definitely see the point about seeing players coming, seeing in long grass etc.

I think being able to see them from slightly farther away is great but yes, you should have to be aiming right at them for it to appear. I think that's a happy medium.

i personally thought it was much better in the old state. the tension of never knowing who was friend or foe until communication was awesome, especially on a server you frequented/became familiar with other players in. but if you're going to see it from looking at them, it should at least not reach very far.

and i kinda guessed this was only temporary, right? and you're gonna still do all of that cool stuff with differentiating players like you talked about... right?

There are always two sides to this:

Group A: Who prefers the secrecy and not having a name plate appear.
Group B: Who have been fighting for ages on how we can identify other players at a distance (to prevent friendly fire).

As an easy medium, pointing in the general direction of the player to view their name plate is a good idea. Don't be surprised when people always have their guns out so we can aim down the iron sights to get a good look at someones name. :P

For my gaming style Garry that would be best...looking at the player more directly to see the tag...or what if you added a delay such as the player had to be in your field of view for 2 or 3 seconds or so before name appeared. That way if you don't want your name known you have an option of running and it might make the other person take a few seconds to ID before blasting away?

Actually this is a pretty good idea... a short delay would (slightly) keep people from being able to just quickly scan around in a circle and look for names that pop up.

It would be nice if Admins (RCON) would be able to disable this for themselves so they can observe players while invisible.

I think just widening the cone of sight for reading player names and then also adding a minimum display timer once the name appears would be a good idea. Like you always have a minimum of 1 second to read the name. Longer than that may interfere with gameplay.

Basically, imagine that your screen is divided into a 3x3 grid. If a player is standing in the center grid (#5), is within a set distance, is not obstructed by any objects, is not crouching in grass and is within a certain value of light---- then that players name will display

You could even pull the light value of the character's current position (perhaps the face specifically) and create a relationship between how dark it is where they are standing and how close you must be to view their identity.

Yes, I think this is a better way to make it easier to read peoples names (so you don't have to be pointed in that perfect spot) and maintain the ability for people to move with stealth.

What do you mean by the Minimum Display Timer though? Are you talking about a delay of 1 second to see the name? like you have to look at them for 1 second or something before you can see any name?

This is the best way to do it IMO, especially if the idea is that you're recognizing someone you know/recognizing a face.

garry nailed it on the head. you should have to be aiming AT someone before their name appears. so you would have to spot someone in the tall grass before you can see a name.

the name shouldn't pop up just from glancing in someone's direction, though. it should be short distance and they should have to be entirely visible.

not that it really matters in grass, since 99% of players turn grass off. but for example you shouldn't look at a rock from 30 yards, and just because someone is peeping over the rock, their nametag shouldn't pop up in bold giant letters on your screen.

the words might as well just say i'm here, kill me instead of a name if that's the suggestion.

why was this changed to always show names anyways?
    - have names show like they always have (range-based)
    - think about a way for friends to identify each-other easier (if you're making a pvp game)
