I just pushed an update out to dev, which will be going live soon. You'll be able to link your servers to a steam group by adding a command line param:

    -steamgroup 103582791429523489

    or in your server config

    server.steamgroup 103582791429523489

If you do this only people that are members of that steamgroup will be able to join that server. We'll have a special tab on the server browser which will show the whitelist servers you can join. Whitelist servers won't show up in the server browser at all unless you can join them.

It's a bit of a pain in the ass to find the actual Steam Group ID. Here's how I do it.

Go to the steam group page. Right click enter chat room.

    Should see something like this:

    The group id is here:

    Awesome feature, thanks for this!

A small suggestion is to add a menu that integrates with your steam groups and lets you select the group you want to whitelist or something, I think a simillar thing exists in CS:GO or L4D2, not sure about it.

I'm going to develop a small tool to find your groupID in Java, I'll post it here in about ~30 minutes.

    Question,

Can I link a group without making it whitelisted players only?
I want the server to be fully public but still want to have a community page for the server.

Create a group and link it to your player base?

That's no different from just making a group forum and telling everyone the link to it.

This is specifically linking the group to be used as access control. The server will likely be rejecting anyone not in the group just flat out. It's not being "linked" in the sense of advertising the group in game.

Links don't work in chat, if that's what you mean.

However if there was a more 'official' way of doing it I'd be pleased.
This whitelist function isn't far off from what I'm asking, I suppose.

Edit: I'm aware of what this is designed to do. I'm just looking for a way of using it to make sure people are more aware of my Steam group.

Put a link to your steam group in your server's thread in the Rust Server subsection?
Here and on the Steam forums (and whatever reddit is doing with server ads.)

Garry, could you expand the whitelist functionality a bit so it could automatically check the age of the Steam account of someone logging into the server and reject anyone with an account less than [X] days old, configurable by the server admin? I'm thinking this could be a great tool to keep out hackers who have just been banned, but then when they figure out a way around the anti-cheat they just create a new Steam account and come right back. New players who may genuinely have a new Steam account could always play on the official servers or elsewhere so I don't think there's any danger in alienating a large group of customers/players.

I think I saw mention of a plugin that gave periodic chat message, like rules reminders or announcements or whatever, but I don't know the details. And if there's no plugin for that I imagine there will be soon.

You could just mention it that way. Every 20 minutes or whatever interval, "Join our Steam group, _name of group_" and searching for the group would find it easily if the name was unique.

    Edited:

That seems like plugin/mod functionality to me, but I'm not garry. That's similar to the plugin that bans you for having non-Rust VAC bans on the assumption that you're a cheater even before caught in Rust.

You're also not understanding what I'm after.
It's not about advertising, It's about people seeing it and being able to easily access it.

Hardly anyone looks at server ads, even more so after actually joining in game.

Do this already. While it works, We all know people are lazy.
I'm just searching for ways to make it easier.

Edit: Off topic but why not allow URL's in chat ?

If they're too lazy they just don't care enough, and you should have little sympathy when they miss out on something due to their own laziness.

You have to draw the line at accommodating lazy dolts somewhere.

Anyway, this is way off topic for the whitelist function, sorry garry.

I agree it's a shame they are lazy but it doesn't change that ultimately things are more fun when you have an active community of more than 10 people.

I have 50 people in the group most have never posted anything and I doubt they read my announcements. I have lots of new players on my server that aren't apart of the steam group and seem surprised it's even there.

It's not my place to decide who's worth the time. It's my place as a server admin to provide the tools to make it a fun environment. Asking if this could be used to make a link in game to a steam group so that people know it's official and easy to join wouldn't hurt anyone.

This is on dev now. If you're in the facepunch group on Steam you should see a whitelist server

Hello! I have multiple steam groups I need to whitelist. How do I go about doing that? I tried multiple server.steamgroup lines and also tried to add the IDs in succession using one server.steam group lines, but none worked. Any ideas?

Don't think that's supported. Everything garry has said describes it as whitelisting one Steam group.
