So, you log in a server, naked, with a rock, a torch and 2 bandages, now what? Welcome to RUST!
I will split this section in environment description, player, and other section for you to understand it better and then jumping to how to start.
-ENVIRONMENT:
-Rust is located in a Peninsula, so you have a coast and mountains in the back. In the following link you will find the map of rust, get used to it.MAP THERE IS NO MAP IN GAME SO LEARN HOW TO POSITION YOURSELF.
-LANDMARKS (places that you can observe and figure your position based on that)
-RAD TOWNS: 3 of them. There are red animals and crates/boxes with loot that spawn every 5 min.
-One with the road passing trough.
-One next to the Hangar.
-One surrounded by plains and nothing else.
-HANGAR: Set of 3 o 5 buildings with a big Hangar in a field. There are red animals and crates/boxes with loot that spawn every 5 min.. In this place the road makes a curve.
-TANKS: they are next to the road. Two big gas tanks surrounded by a lot of red animals.
-DAY / NIGHT: There is a day night system in rust, you have 45 minutes of Day and 15 minutes of Night. Refer to GAMMA FIX to see trough the night.
-RESOURCES: Are only found in valleys. You will not find anything in mountains. Refer to valleys in the RUST MAP. You can find resources from red animals and crates but there is no comparison to gather them.
-NPC (RED Animals & Animals)
-RED ANIMALS(EX ZOMBIES): Blueprints and other lootable stuff.
-Red Wolf: Fast but low HP. 2 ARROWS
-Red Bear: Fatty but slower of the two NPC. 3/4 ARROWS
-ANIMALS: Needed for food and cloth mainly. Located only in valleys.
-PIGS(Passive): Your main target. Kill 2/3 to craft a sleeping bag. 2 ARROWS
-DEERS(Passive): Only killable if you have a ranged weapon, dont bother running with a melee, you will never hit it. As soon as you have the Hunter Bow this is your target. 2 ARROWS
-WOLFS(Aggresive): Your worst nightmare as a naked guy. Avoid at all cost unless you have a ranged weapon. 2 ARROWS
-BEARS(Aggresive): Your second worst nightmare as a naked guy. Avoid at all cost unless you have a ranged weapon. 4 ARROWS
-PLAYER:
-HEALTH If it reachs 0 you die. Eat food/medkits to restore a minimal amount. Stand by a campfire and you will gain HP again faster.
-HUNGER: If you reach 0 you will start loosing HP by 2 o 4 per tick. If you sit in a campfire and are low on food, the COMFORT status will slow the HUNGER metter.
-BLEEDING: You will loose a determined amount of HP per tick. It will stop at XX ticks. Can be healed with medkits. As soon as you get bleeding use a medkit.
-INJURED: If you fall from a high height you will break a bone. In this state you barely move, crouched all the time, cannot jump but you don't loose life (appart from the falling). Medkits doesn't work here, wait a few moments and it will autoheal.
-RADIATION: Value located in the lower part of the health box. If it reaches 500 you will start loosing health. It will gradually go up as you are in a radiation zone like RAD TOWNS, you can hear the sound of radiation. It can be decresed by eating rad pills or going away from the radiation zone. Rad equipment will slower the radiation.
-POISON: If you eat raw meat you will get poison. DO NOT EAT RAW MEAT
-FOOD: Used to restore food meter. Dont forget that food restores HP too, use it together with medkits in case of emergency.
-CRAFTING: With a few exceptions you can craft everything in game. You start with a basic set of blueprients by default and you will learn the rest by finding blueprints (Right Click->Study) or using a research kit in an object you want to learn.
-DYING: Get used to it. You will die and drop all your stuff. You have a fixed amount of time to recover it, if not it's gone forever. When you die you have to options RESPAWN: Random sector, AT CAMP, you will go to the last sleeping bag if it has no timer.
-GAMEPLAY:
I'm listing the non obvious controls.
- "E" interact with objects.
- HOLD "E" open FURNACE AND CAMPFIRE menu to put items inside. Also opens the DOORS menu to set passwords.
- "G" Turn laser sight on/off
- "F" Turn Flashlight on/off
- HOLD "V" to speak. Only a small Radius will hear you, the closer the louder. Be aware, enemy can hear you too and can track your location based on the sound.
- Ctrl + Click in the plus (+) button while crafting will select the Max amount available to craft (no more endless clicking to craft)

If you need to suicide press F1 to open the console command and type suicide. You will loose everything.
MY FIRST SURVIVAL STEPS!
Now that you are aware of the common basics things in Rust let's focus on your first actions and problems.
First of all try to locate yourself in the map. If you can then decide if this is a good place to start. If you don't like the place press f1 then type suicide.
The idea is to be in a place where you have resources to gather, animals and red animals to farm. In this places you will also find other players, you are warned. What do you do with these encounters depends on you.
Once we found a place with resoruces its time for us to get the 2 important things: FOOD and sleeping Bag. So based on this our priority is to hunt PIGS, 2 or 3 will give you 15 cloth to make your sleeping bag.
If you feel like going one step ahead try to get another 5 cloth more to craft the hunter bow (To craft both SB and BOW you need 20 cloth).
Gather one or two rocks to get stone for the arrows and stone hatchet, and chop some wood to craft the bow, a shelter, wooden door and a wooden storage box
Note: to get wood get the piles of wood, not the trees.
In this process we should have the basic resources to start our little love shack.
In total we need 180 Wood 10 Stone 20 Cloth to craft our basic things. You should remeber this quantities since this could be called the starter base for every server and everytime you loose your base.
To gather this, aprox, 3 piles of wood, 2 or 3 stones (any type) and 3 to 5 PIGS.
-Hunter Bow (35 Wood 5 cloth)
-Sleeping Bag (15 cloth)
-Arrows x5 (20 Wood 5 Stone)
-Stone Hatchet (10 Wood 5 Stone)
-Storage Box (30 Wood)
-Campfire (5 Wood)
-Wood Shelter (50 Wood)
-Wood Door (30 Wood)
Once you gather all of this and if you are still alive from the whole process it's time to set our first base. Find a HIDDEN PLACE to put your shelter. I will say it again. FIND A BLOODY HIDDEN PLACE, meaning not easy to find.
I've seen and raided thousends of this shelters because they are in the middle of the forest or valleys and can be seen miles aways and this is exactly what you don't want 'cos your rust experiencie will last 10 minutes and you won't survive the first night there.
So try to aim to the rocks, find a nice hidden place between some rocks and start crafting the structures. When you finish crafting the wooden door and shelter put them in your shortcuts. press the correct button and put the shelter in the place.
Once you have done that place the door (move around a bit until it's green) and step inside. VOILA! breath your newly fresh shelter.
Place your sleeping bag, wood storage and campfire.
Eleriath posted:
NOTE: Campfire and all fire in Rust emits a light in the dark (gunshots, furnace, torchs, flashlight, laser sight) and can be easly, but really really easly seen in the dark, so my recomendation is use those in daylight.
I will repeat it again, you DO NOT WANT to GIVE AWAY your position.
To cook Hold E while looking into the campfire, place the raw chicken where it says COOK, and wood in the lower part. Over time the chicken will cook and also the wood will become charcoal.
The wooden door can be only opened by you. It can be destroyed by (200 Hits - Hatchet) (84 Hits - Pickaxe) and with the rock, or stone hatchet, but I don't know the exact numbers of hits (much more thant the hatchet)
You can set a password to the door by holding E. This is only usefull if you want to share it with someone else.
Now if you die you will respawn in your sleeping bag, place your belongings into the wooden storage and keep only the neccesary to go again into the wild.
From now on you will have to think what do you want to carry before opening the door. If you go hunting, go with bow, arrows food and bandange, nothing more. Dress for the ocation, do not go like rambo.
Congratz, you have given the first and most important step in Rust!
WHAT NOW? I WANT GUNS!1!!11!11!
Eleriath posted:
Want Guns? Want to defend yourself? Have you been shot and killed thousends and thousends of times? worry not mate, here we are going to produce guns like a bloody war factory!
But not now :)
We have our shelter and can gather all the resources, now we need to convert them into what we need.
OBJECTIVE: Make a
Furnace (15 stone, 20 Wood, 10 low Grade Fuel)
Workbench (50 Woods, 8 Stones)
Now this time we need to make a Workbench to craft the advanced things and the furnace to produce metal fragments, sulfur and leather.
Go gather the neccesary wood and stone to craft both of them. The low grade fuel is crafted from (2 animal fat 1 cloth), so basically killing animals.
Craft the low grade fuel, then Furnace, Workbench and place them inside the shelter. The same recomendation for the campfire light in the dark applies to the furnace.
Now place the metal ore, Sulfur ore in the furnace (Hold E while looking at furnace) and put wood too. over time it will melt the ore into metal fragments and sulfur. Again the wood will produce charcoal.
With our furnace working let me announce you that you have now all the available items that works/produce resources ingame....

...and here comes the question. What do you want to do?
CHOICES
You can start doing different things from now on, depends on you/your team needs, time spent ingame, etc..
HAVE FUN! Here is where the actual survival game begins.
-Building your Base: So, you want a bigger house, secure, a place where you feel safe and mostly where your most precious fortune will stay in a secure vault.
Before we get into that, a few comments:
-The bigger the house/tower, the most attention will get as a raiding target.
-Will my base be forever secure? NO
-Is there an Anti-Raiding house? NO
-So, it will be raided? YES
-I will loose everything? YES
-Then why build a base? Good question.
This is such a good question that I would like to point 2 points of view:
1.-When I play solo, I usually find a very very hard place in mountains to reach, but when i say hard is like a Riff, hidden caves, etc.., the harder to reach, better the place. Once I find it, I place my sleeping bag and start fillng the place with small stash.
for the other buildings like furnace, campfire and workbench I put them in a shack not to far away from there and work with that.
If you think about it none will ever raid me or find me, just simply because there is no house, and sleeping bag and small stash dissapears from the sight when you walk away, so there is no way for others to spot the place.
NOW, the problem comes with hackers. unfortunantly this type of strategy is usless since this guys can see the loot and go straight to that. I've done this and if there wasn't a hacker in the server they would have never find my things.
That's why the base building. It will be raidable, but hell they will need a lot of C4 and be very good players.
2.-Base Building
Gathering wood to build wood planks is a pain in the ass, gathering metal fragments for the metal doors are More than a pain in the ass....so how would you feel if all that effort could last 1hour, because someone just raided you using stairs? 1 c4? Loosing everything to a single stair? Ragequit, right?
So, when building your base, have this things in mind, memorize them, and PLAN THE FUCKING BASE. Do not run naked putting fundations in the grounds, rising walls and stairs just like that!! plan the bloody base! Take your time, craft everything before even putting the 1st fundation on the ground.
-Hide it, the longer they take to spot your base, the less you will become a target. Build it in the middle of a Rad town and you will be attacked almost all the time.
-Watch youtube videos on how people RIDE bases, not how to build them. You will see how they get into them. Learn from others mistakes.
-The more Metal doors, more c4 they will need.
-Build anti stairs around your base, these are fundations with a pillar in the center. They cannot build anything, nor a ramp, stairs, etc..
-They can and will build a ramp in your door, this will be fixed with the fundation and pillar in the center. Have in mind that.
-Check this video about WOOD WALLS. Place them so they will have to spend 2 c4 insteed of 1. IT'S SUPER IMPORTANT.VIDEO
- Every metal door you build counts as 2 c4, If they want your loot make them spend as much as you can. If they got short on c4 then you won.
I will continue later.
-Farming Blueprints: To be continued.
-AirDrops Farming: To be continued.
TIPS and RANDOM STUFF
- Always carry bandages or cloth, If you Bleed to death you will remember my words.
- Ctrl + Click in the plus (+) button while crafting will select the Max amount available to craft (no more endless clicking to craft)
- GAMMA FIX will make your night the prefered time to play.VIDEO
Escaping and Moving
This may sound stupid but in this particular game....shooting a gun to a moving target is not really easy stuff so, adding to this if you move unpredictable they will miss...a lot.
SO, escaping is possible, even in the worst case scenarios. Practice in PVP servers that are pure guns and kills everywhere.
Why you die so much?
-If you stand still, you will die, Easy target.
-If you run straight in the same direction you will die, Easy target.
-If you run all the time in plain land, roads,Rads, you will die, easy spotable.
-If you stay to chat standing still you will die, Easy headshot.
-IF YOU USE A TORCH, FLASHLIGHT OR SOMETHING THAT SHINES IN THE DARK YOU ARE THE EASIEST TARGET, unless you are a decoy, then nvm.
Tips on what to do to avoid being killed easly:
-Your objective when escaping is loosing your persecutor or kill him. How? by making him loosing the line of sight. If he can't see you he can't kill you. Rocks are designed to do this, once you got into any rock formation you have a higher chance of surviving than running in plain ground. Remember, you need to loose Line of Sight from your persecutor.
-RUN IN ZIG ZAG BUT DO NOT JUMP. You need speed, but zig zagging will make you a difficult target to shot. Vary the length of the zig zag.
-When you reach rocks, the chase is almost done, go inside the rocks making curves, going up, down, and even returning. Be unpredictable, but do not go to the top of the rocks, they will see you.
-Always listen, put the music on 0, because your first warning is another footstep close enough. NPC's footsteps are really fast compared to other players, easly distinct them.
-Before runing in a plain or a valley, scout it hidden to see if there is anyone there.
-If you want to kill your persecutor, after he lost you, try to flank him, return in one of the rocks, Surprise is your card, The hunter may not excpect to be hunted.
-AUDIO is your best friend, hear footsteps, shoots, reloading guns, voices, npc's running a guy, all of that is information you have to have in mind. move the camera to locate the origin of the sound.
-Please if you want to be unseen, crouch and hide in the dark, check if someone can see you from behind. When using mountains place yourself in mountains shelves, where the background will help you camuflage and you can't be backstabed, not in the very top where your silluette will easly reveal your position.
-If you hear another footsteps analyze the situation, Run if you don't have cover, hide in the mountains, stop and crouch and then start to move again, try to locate him before he see's you.
-If someone you don't know wants to talk to you and you want to answer, strafe right and left if their guns is out.
-Travel long distances by night without any light.
-YOU ARE NOT RAMBO, do not engage with a pick axe, or bow or the rest of the melee wpns, you need a lot of practice before you can even hit anyone. Just run.
You can and WILL be killed, but it won't be easy for the persecutor. I even run straight in their faces to freak them out and run in circles. If they are impatient they will loose ammo trying to hit you. They may even run out of it.
If they have aimbot.....well....you tried.
Keep in mind all of this when playig. This little things will increase your survivability a lot.
Im Working on it yet. Updating soon.
