At first glance, I was not sure about these mutant bears and wolves replacing zombies, but after playing the game for a bit I realized that the real NPC's the devs added were not actually the red animals! Turns out killer woodpiles were a genious way to add a bit of flare into Rust. I love having to collect large amounts of wood, metal, or sulphur! It adds this fear into me, a fear no bandit or bear could bring. Sure a lot of noobs come on and complain about it being unfair or game breaking but I always just reply, "You must have done something to the graphics settings" or "This is a sandbox survival, if you want a carebear hand-holding game go play WoW"

Also specualtion thread, all the vvvvvv's might mean. vvvvvve are going to add more killer woodpiles.

Seriously though, give me your best woodpile jokes!

I only get it on ore nodes, not the wood piles. Usually if I stand in front of it and crouch, it doesn't happen. But when I stand on top of it, or press W (forward) while mining it, it usually gives me fall damage. vvvvvvery ouch

If you keep your distance while mining it doesn't happen
I think they should keep it in. Something you get hurt mining.
I didn't die I think it was because I was using the axe instead of the pick axe.

A little off topic there I think.

Back on track. I too was killed by a woodpile. I respawned and was instakilled by spawning inside a rock. Then after a couple of minutes was killed by an ore node. Swapped servers and OK so far (Touch wood. Oops, better not). Maybe its got something to do with the various server side game changing additions some servers have.

I am pretty sure the wood/rock deaths are due to the changing models as you hit them. They have bits poking out on some smaller models that are bigger than the larger model and if you stand too close you intersect that new model when it switches and you die.

So stand back. I haven't died since I started doing this.

This happened to me with an ore node. I didn't die but suddenly got injured with 7 health left. I just move away from the node every hit, like I'm dancing around it xD

    Now I've seen everything.
They should make a trading called "killer rock".

Seems like the woodpile thing got the attention of the devs. Maybe we could add woodpiles into the story of why we ended up on this island in the first place.

President Garry Woodpile was elected after former President Obama, and soon after a small group of "dangerous radicals" discovered evidence that the newly elected President's late wife didn't die from natural fall damage as the President had claimed, but rather from simply touching her husband! Bringing this evidence to the media, President Woodpile was forced to admit that she died with him and not alone at their summer house, but claimed that it was actually her fault because she didn't touch him at max range, used a pickaxe and was crouching. More investigations immediately followed and the "dangerous radicals" found evidence that President Woodpile had killed several other individuals, regardless of their range from him, tool they were carrying, or whether they were standing or crouching. Before the troublemakers could post said evidence on the net President Garry Woodpile struck first, charging JSOC with the duty of gathering these terrorists and throwing them naked on an island with nothing but two band aids and a torch in order to suffer for the rest of their short, miserable lives. You are one of these so called terrorists, you MUST survive. But be warned, the struggle for survival can even lead patriots such as yourselves to kill their fellow man. You must be cautious of your former comrades, and even more cautious of the presidents woodpile and rock soldiers. Do NOT give up hope, we are coming for you, and the separatists will provide airdrops when we can. Remember our motto, even the strongest metal will RUST in time. Good Luck. RUST actual out.

thats what i figured out the couple times it happened to me, it looked like i fell an inch and died. So now i crouch and keep my distance. Dont like the new resource pile degradation at all

It's almost like the resources are ragdoll's now or take splash damage. I haven't had the pleasure of being killed by wood piles or boulders, I did however take damage while gathering and shrugged it off thinking it was this glitch. Then I turned around to be greeted by a buckshot sandwich. Oh how ironic the death's are in this game at times.

such a well thought out intro realy got me into it, love the idea of your backstory, especially the rebellious bit, gives a real sense of purpose to the game

What if this island is in the southern hemisphere? Moss would grow thicker on the opposite side of the tree...

Fun fact, moss does not grow reliably enough on the north side of trees for this to be a suitable and reliable orientation technique. Plus, this would require a lot of model customization, or some clunky code to fake it, for all trees to have moss growing on mostly one side.

It's a common myth, but take a look and you'll see moss contradicting itself as far as where "north" is in practically any damp forest environment.

I know reading is hard, but there is very little text on the card and it clearly states that they are considering commemorating the bug with a Steam trading card. That is completely different from "let's put killer wood piles into the game for real".

I always thought when people are arguing about not having zombies, or having zombies, that we don't really know what rust is about. How can we say, "this belongs and that doesn't" when we have no idea of the context. Obviously I think that's a little too jokie to be implemented but I hope the devs will consider telling us some kind of backstory so we can be more useful when we are trying to come up with what should be in the world of Rust.

As it is now, all we know is that we have to survive. We don't know why we are on the island or why planes drop things off from time to time, or why everything is irradiated.
