Thats more of a MMO style.
Maybe add more types of NPC's into the world, but not change them. It would seem annoying to constantly have to patch the game because different sorts of NPCs have come.

I would like to see specific mobs for each part of the map if biomes get implemented... Some form of humaniod would make the most logical choice, but yea, zombies are overdone. Even if if they are hostile NPC roamers, it doesn't have to be overthought.
Reading all of the suggestions I think the best replacement at the moment (most likely a placeholder even) are mutants. It should be a simple replace or mesh and texture and animation. I like the idea of also having range attack types but we probably won't see that. Further on, I would love to see some sort of a scavenging/primitive human NPC, which forage resources in the area and KOS if you're in close vicinity to their settlement.
If we're talking about what and what doesn't make sense then tell me how a zombie can carry entire metal houses around in their pockets. Got a metal foundation and two metal stairs from a zombie just the other day.
Would like to see handcuffs, and the ability to make holding cells.
Would love to capture people from enemy factions and trap them, forcing their group to give us what we want. And when someone is captured and in a holding cell they cannot F1>Suicide.
Also, could we add playable children characters.
Would love to play a young boy who is trying to survive the environment of rust. Could have an aging system, 4 days IRL makes the child grow up. You can choose to start as a child or adult.
You would have that aspect of do i want to kill this child who is resourcing, can i morally kill him?
It would also give people the ability to Roleplay, my friend on Teamspeak could play as my child, and my other friend could be my spouse (why the hell not) and we survive through Rust. It'd be fun, something different, something that no other game has to offer.

The developers said numerous times the zombies were only placeholders. Unless I'm mistaken, the zombie in Rust is a model taken from the unity asset store as well.
then everybody would play as a child since they could hide more easily and be harder to hit with bullets, you'd have a flood of little midget bastards hitting you in the knees with their rocks
I emailed the devs and asked them to consider allowing mod server admins to continue to develop NPCs like zombies for custom maps, but I haven't gotten a response, yet. I want to work on even more quest swith custom NPCs and new deployable objects...

I love the ideas of mutated animals because they look a lot scarier. Really hope they do something like the mutated wolf & pig pic above. Those would scare the shit out of me when I'm walking around at night. I guess when they add swamps, this ugly thing can be thrown in there as a boss enemy.
