I've been enjoying this game. However, not enough to recommend to friends that they put down $20 to buy it in alpha. Is there currently or will there ever be a trial version (or a free weekend) that people could play to see if they would enjoy it?

Doubt it, it's very rare you see an unreleased game get a demo, because a ton can change in the development cycle.
