    Hi there,

if there is already a thread about this then I'm too stupid to find it.

It would be very neat if you could see the names of people you know from a greater distance. For example I have 4 neighbours I often meet but you almost have to go to meelee range to see their names. I got killed 2 times because I had to get to close to someone to notice that he isn't one of my neighbours. To close too run away BANG shotgun to the face. 5 meters for memorized names more would be perfectly fine so at least there is a chance to get away in an emergency.

[edit] can someone please move this to the suggestion section? saw it just now...

While I don't disagree, I don't agree. When I see my friends at work from a distance I don't see something pop up above their heads letting me know they're my friend. They do need to do something to make friendlies/frenemies/enemies more noticeable. Given this is still in alpha I have faith they will fix everyone from looking very similar. Maybe better character features, clothing color options, etc.

Then you would be able to spot every1 if they are at distance.

A solution would be a friend list in game, and if 2 players have each other in their friend list, then they would be able to see each others names even when they are distant to each other.

    And I (still) totally agree.
I want to see my friends over a huge distance the whole time. :P

Or they could make it so you need to aim your crosshair directly at another player for their name to showup at a distance.

I feel nametags should show up at any range so long as you are aiming at the person. Too many friendly fire incidents, too many incidents of people thinking I'm closing in for the kill when in reality I'm just trying to get close enough to read their name.

I've always disliked the "it's not realistic" crowd, in real life people have distinct features, online the only distinct thing about people is their username.

As for the "nametags ruin stealth" crowd, that's complete horse. Nametags only show up if you are aiming directly at someone.

thing is that since there is only one character model , it is physically impossible to tell who is who at a distance,

    friendly firing is extremely easy.

As customization is improved, I am sure we won't need this as we will be able to easily recognize friends. Things like dyes for clothing would help.

just come closer to the unknow person to know his name. it's like russian roulette where you may :

    1. Found your friends
    2. Found unknown species holding a rock
    3. Found unknown species holding a rock but will hit you into pieces
    4. Found unknown species holding a rock and he actually have a shotgun but he is friendly
    5. Found unknown species holding a rock and he admit he is just a new spawn and will stab you with his handmade shell from behind
    6. Found unknown species wearing leather vest, oh wait it's a zombie that looks like humen wearing leather from far.

I dont agree with this at all because :

    1. Bandits gonna be hobos soon as people will recognize them and what can they do? sitting below the tree with " Will work for food " ?
    2. Rust will become The Sims 4
    3. much more

I've talked about this before, such as the 'tag as friendly' solution. But that one is better for other purpose such as tagging will let you share door permission and maybe house ownership/partnership.

For now, what we need is unique identification. You know, facial stuff. And it's already announced on playrust.com

    Player Customization
We skipped this completely on the first run at the player model because we just wanted something that worked. Customizable faces, beards, hair is something we’re in early talks about. It’s not as huge priority as other stuff on this list – but it’s something we’re basing decisions on.

Generally if someone gets too close to me I assume they are hostile and I shoot first and ask questions later.

In real life you can recognize people you know from quite a ways away. It's not just facial features but gait, height, weight, types of clothes they normally wear etc. Having to go up to a few inches from someones face and the have a big yellow name pop over their head is probably not what Facepunch has in mind for the final game.

We need to see friends in blue, rivals in red and yellow for everyone else and also see names over sleepers so we know who is passed out where in addition to distances increasing.

I'd also love to see some different armor customization so everyone doesn't look identical all the time (although that does add a element of strategy and fun)

OTOH, I'm sure all of your friends don't look exactly identical, nor are they prone to shooting at you.

If they are, you have strange friends.

yeah until face punch adds a robust character customization system complete with armor dye and flare
then there is just no justifiable reason to not have long range player name tags.

and bandits are easy to recognize , they be the dick head in full kevlar and automatic weapons in kill squads, it is HARD to miss that.

it everyone else that we want it for.

It's hard to think of a system where this could work in a way that is both not too easily exploitable by bandits/hit-squads (griefers in general) and also not too clunky.

and not knowing the identity of a person until they are with in shotgun range is not exploitable?

Eh, the Kevlar stereotypes aren't fully true, I've ran around in Kevlar and have given away a lot of the shit I find to newspawns, hell, I even gave basically all of an airdrop crate that I got to a low-gear player that was sure I was going to kill him. But I guess I do follow the stereotype because after hackers noclipped into my house and took all my metal/wood/resources I started KOSing, but even then, I had sense to not kill newspawns. Egocentric rant over, I think the hackers should be dealt with fully before anything else in done, because they completely ruin the game for most people.

Maybe the stereotypes aren't fair but if I see someone in Kevlar I assume they are hostile and will most likely try to kos me, so I either try and get a do on them or head in the opposite direction.

This has been suggested before. My spin on this was that currently in the game I can only identify someone if they are within 3 meters of me but I can identify people that i've seen before from 10-15 meters. We should be able to have a friends list and someone on your friends list would have their name visibile from 15-20 meters and their name would appear blue. An enemy list would do the same thing but have their name be red.

I really think this is something that's just not a priority right now. As the game matures the devs have already stated that they want to add customization to people. Clothes, tattoos, hair, things like that.

Having someone's name hover over them at 100 yards is just silly. It doesn't happen in real life.

Who said you can't recognize a known face within 100 meters?

    But yeah, you're right.
Thats a way to deal with this problem.
And it also creates some stealth possibilities.
Means people will use the same cloth as you and your friends.

Definitely. I think the Rust team has repeatedly said that they don't want this to be another typical FPS MMO with "right click to add buddy" and whatever. They want this to be more like real life, where you have to decide based on intuition whether or not to trust someone, where everybody is in a fight for survival, and where the guy who just traded you weapons might shoot you in the back as you walk away.

Problem is it's pretty annoying if you have to recraft your team outfit every time you die using materials that are probably hard to obtain.

    Edited:

Bandits could also wear your dropped uniform; this is kinda cool for stealth but bandits have too many advantages as is..

    Edited:

Also, you could disguise your Kevlar as your naked skin or cloth using the right dyes.
Overall, hovering names are much more balanced.
