We're the Rust Basterds (and we want our scalps), and we'd like to offer our services to a few additional server administrators. Over the last three days we've been quietly working with a few server admins with great results (we can provide references privately, these admins requested to not be listed here due to potential hacker retaliation). In all cases we're hearing reports of over 90% less hacking, or at least reported hackers by users, on their servers. Now that we have a bit more free time we'd like to add a few new clients to our list (this is a free service for the Rust community). If you're a server admin who's fed up with hackers ruining his or her server, please send us an email (rustbasterds@gmail.com).

    What our services include:
    - Three days of monitoring your server off and on, with on-demand requests during peak times (though we ask you provide us those times so we're already there).
    - Full details of hackers we catch, including FRAPS evidence.
    - Access to our team lead via Skype so you can quickly chat with us during the heat of the moment as well as receive status updates from us throughout the day.
    - You can provide us with a list of white-listed players you trust as well as suspected hackers you haven't been able to catch, though the smart ones are inevitably hiding under your nose.
    - We'll educate you on all the various hacks that are being used so you can better administer your server.
    - Complete professionalism at all times. We will not speak in chat (unless you want us to for some reason) and we will work quickly and efficiently.
    - We will eradicate every single hacker we can from your server.

Who are we and why are we doing this?
We're a small group of late 20's/early 30's guys who were previously running a popular Rust server that was seeing peaks of 100 people online during prime time. The server in question now sees around 10 people on during peek time. This is almost entirely due to hackers pissing off our community. We tried our best to stop them but as all server admins know this is a very hard job. The problem is we still love Rust as a game and see a bright future ahead of it, and we cannot abide hackers ruining it for everyone else. Until the Facepunch team has time to fix these exploits (game development is not easy, and staying ahead of hackers is an extremely difficult task, especially when you're trying to actually improve the game itself as well) we've decided to take matters into our own hands.

It's also really fun to hunt down hackers, quietly have them banned, and shoot them in the face. Have I mentioned we hate hackers?

    Why should you trust us?
We'll provide everything we can to prove we're trustworthy, including giving you the names and steam ID's we'll be using throughout the process. If at any moment you feel we're somehow abusing our role in eradicating hackers from your server you can ask us to leave and we'll disconnect immediately. FRAPS evidence will be included for every hacker we report back to you or ban ourselves (it's up to you if you'd like to provide us with access to kick/ban, preferably with a mod like Oxide as we prefer not to handle RCON passwords). As previously mentioned we can also provide references privately from other server admins we've worked with.

    How does this all work?
We can provide further details in a Skype call which we'd schedule with you after a brief email conversation.

If you're interested in working with us please email us at: rustbasterds@gmail.com

Facepunch: We're happy to provide you guys will all of the FRAPS evidence and detailed reports of what we've found thus far as well as all future activities if it will help you guys patch various exploits faster. Consider us at your disposal.

    Edited:

We've already received a few emails and I realized I should have asked for the following when contacting us:

    - Please describe the hacker situation on your server. How many reports are you getting? What's exploit that's being reported most often? How many hackers have you caught yourself?

    - Please give us an overview of the population of your server. Specifically, what's your peak population during prime time and where are the majority of your players located (time zone)?

No need to provide the name/IP of your server until we speak further.

Hmm, a hacker-hunter team? Interesting concept I guess, especially when your current administration team is busy with other matters or is not well informed on the various hacks out there.

We've already got some trolls on our cross-posted Reddit thread (one of which is surely a pissed off hacker claiming to have spoken to us and then scammed)!

Thanks for all the emails so far, we'll be responding to everyone we can later this evening.

Just to clarify one thing (a comment brought up in the reddit thread): There is absolutely ZERO risk to you. As I mentioned we do not ask for rcon and you can do all the banning yourself. We will simply provide video evidence of hackers and you can decide for yourself what to do. Also, as mentioned previously, we're not looking for any compensation for the foreseeable future (we'll decide on this later depending on demand). Right now this is a service for the Rust community and I'll update the OP to reflect that.

Or tired of playing the game full of hackers, which in many cases is unplayable, so what's the alternative? Hunting down hackers is quite fun and helps the game in the long term.

We like doing it. That's all that matters!

I'm just curious here as the logic is quite flawed. You offer this administration of hacker hunting services yet you claim that the reason for providing this is because hackers killed your server. Isn't that kind of an oxymoron? You guys hunt hackers, yet you weren't so successful at it on your own server? If your own server wasn't successful with your service, what makes you think it would be successful on my server or a server managed by anyone else? You can answer this question publicly please.

The hacker problem hit our server overnight. We had no idea what to do at the time because we hadn't looked into the nature of the hacks themselves and were too scared to do so. We tried to fight hacks with the means all other server admins fight them, which unfortunately is very hard to do. In many cases hackers have more tools than you do. In fact, some of the tools at hackers disposal make it very apparent which other players are hacking, yet server admins do not have these tools!

You should be able to see where I'm going with this... fight fire with fire. At the time we were not taking that strategy. When we realized that was the only method to truly catch them it was far too late.

I hope this answers your question.

Not really. Still makes no sense to me. Basically you're now sounding as if you're going to fight hackers by hacking them yourself. Especially from your original post when you said "It's also really fun to hunt down hackers, quietly have them banned, and shoot them in the face. Have I mentioned we hate hackers?"

So do two wrongs really make a right? So you hunt them down, turn on some hacks to gun them down, and then ban them? Really?

To those who are considering the OP's offer, I'd suggest you consider seeking the assistance of trustworthy friends before trusting strangers. Sure, they may or may not have the best intentions here. But what it seems like to me is that a group of kids are just seeking administrative powers on populated servers because their own server lacks a decent population. Sounds more like power hungry abusive admin desires to me. Can you really trust giving administrative privileges to someone you ran across on forums? No thanks.

I agree, handing out admin rights to random people is sketchy, even if they have good intentions.
I don't know if these guys would be badmins or not... but I know I'd be watching them just as closely as I watch other players on my server.

In my experience thus far we can catch a hacker 10x faster than a regular admin and no one is done any harm (except the hacker). No one knows we're doing it because we're very careful, and if the admin would like to provide additional access no one will see us do it (Invis Gear). There are certain tools that allow you to literally see which guys are running across the map at super speed, jumping higher than they should be, hitting house after house, etc.

Sure, you could argue we're fighting evil with evil, but at the moment there is honestly no better method. It's not like there are innocent casualties here or anything. I know a few admins who are already doing this themselves and have admitted it is 10x more effective. The problem is most admins do not want to venture down this path (for good reason).

    you guys spelled bastards wrong
Forgive me if you're being sarcastic, but it's meant to be an Inglorious Basterds reference.

I've stated a number of times now that we do not require any special access or admin privileges. We can simply find hackers, FRAPS them, kill them (or not), and hand over the evidence to the server admins. Hell, we could just start doing this without any permission at all I guess, but I'd much rather have a discussion first and help those in serious need. Of course having access would make things go faster, but by no means do we need it.

I think it might help if you can provide interested individuals with proof (FRAP vids etc) to show how many hackers you guys detected so far.

So basically you made this thread pretending you had good intentions but you left out the biggest detail in the OP, and that is the fact that you are actually going to be hacking while on the server. You essentially want server owners to give you free reign to cheat under the guise of "catching hackers".

It was a reference of the movie, 'Inglorious Basterds'
The movie is about a team of Jews that hunt Nazis and scalp them.

Actually its not. The only relevance to jews in that movie is A: its WWII, and B, the plots described were planned by a couple of jewish folk. But its a movie about attempts to kill nazi political leadership.

Wait, no, it mentions scalps... once. in the synopsis. on Wikipedia.

I agree with the premise accept for the fight fire with fire part. If you guys have to hack to catch hackers, then what makes your team so special. How's about a little strategy and coordination to catch said hackers instead of taking the easy route?

And apparently you didn't watch past the halfway point, the script doesn't contain the word scalp past the midpoint. Hell the scalping itself stops a quarter of the way in. I ain't got time to go hunt down a movie to tell a bunch of rust buckets that their self proclaimed title is a tad off.

You are cheating script kiddies who tried to run your own server....FAILED.

Now, you are asking server admins to give you script kiddies free use of their servers to run around with your cheats/scripts enabled........sounds legit!

    **Edit**

And to take this a step further, you want to have a Skype conversation with server admins? HELL TO THE NO! Only a fool would be willing to have a skype conversation with anyone they dont know, and especially who is an admitted script kiddie. Skype is the EASIEST way for people to get your IP and do cool hipster stuff like DDOS attacks and the such.

I hope people are smart enough to avoid this like the plague.

At first I thought it was going to be just basic administration, using what's currently provided by Rust.

But upon further reading, it would seem as though your intentions are to fight cheaters with cheat, IE, fight fire with fire?

I still see it as cheating. Sure, your intentions might be good. But in all honesty, how many people do you actually think would entrust complete strangers to cheat on their server? Especially with the complete lack of any proof whatsoever, other than your words.

Good luck, I guess. But I'd never even consider this an option.

I don't really find the logic behind using hacks to help find other hackers, seems pretty ironic to me.

I must say this thread gave me a good laugh, I needed that. Good job.

Don't come crying here though if you end up getting VAC banned while doing this.

    Edited:

Well you see I am an admin on my clans server, and we have hackers but their really not that big of a problem we just tp to the supposed hacker with invis clothing on and if we see them doing aimbot noclip super jump or something like that then its a instaban to big deal they might comeback but we will ban them again no big deal. I thank you for your service but its not really needed if you have active admins.
