I recently rented a rust server from HFBservers. The prices were great so I thought why not.

Problem is I selected my server location based on how close it was to me. I live in Alberta Canada and chose Seattle as its closest to me and Seattle servers often have good latency for me.

Unfortunately the ping when I join my server is 120+ I'm currently in talks with support to change locations Chicago is full.

Anyone in my general location have a recommendation for a good server location?

I don't start to see any latency issues until my ping is over 200.

I wouldn't choose New York. I have been on the node for a little bit now and my server is starting to act very strange. They said it was because "Alpha" software, but yet I do not see any other servers having the same issues I do. It is always a mystery as to what is causing random crashes / server rubber banding.

From my experience I start noticing some issues above 150 which 120 is well below but mind you I was the only person on the server.

But even given that I would have a hard time settling with a server I'm paying for and having a ping that I wouldn't even choose from. I get latency between 30-70 on on most Seattle based servers in rust, most likely from different providers though.

Well, I would want great ping if I were paying for a server too. The different providers do seem to have different levels of service. Do they have a phone number or something you could just call them and ask them which location should give you the best ping. If they can't tell you, then they are not much of a provider...

    HFB isn't the greatest.

A bit of Googling would show you that in high amounts.

You're probably right sir. Any suggestions on a decent provider? They have no refund policy but seeing as how the service is utter garbage and I played through PayPal that won't be an issue.

I actually asked support for a list of available locations and the IP for the servers so I could find out myself. No response yet.

Try pinging our US location: bmrf.me

we're on a tier 1 network so should be a good reference ping while looking for providers in the Northern US.

I just looked through all the open tickets in our system and I believe it was responded to but if not please PM me your ticket number.

I have an HFB server hosted in Seattle and it's always smooth and works very well.
Granted, I LIVE in Seattle so my ping is usually around 20-30, this obviously won't be the case for everyone...
But you can't blame the server hosting for your own geographic location. HFB is the one hosting company I found that has the most options for physical server location and the best price.

I don't expect you will do much better with Chicago servers. The fiberoptic capabilities running north from Seattle are not as robust as those heading south and east. Chicago is likely the same. Find the best ping and identify their provider.

** We run an HFB server and are very satisfied with them. **

    Cheers!

Also, I believe HFB can provide IPs that you can ping to give you a good idea of where the best place to host a server would be.

Well good to see some nice feedback. I have gotten a response and have asked them to switch the server base to Quebec after getting the IP server list and pinging it with around 30ms all around.

Hopefully it works out. I will say that the support is pretty decent I have dealt with many server hosts with great service and price but horrible horrible support.

I do hope this works as the price is the best I've seen and like I said the support has been pretty good. Just looking for a better ping now ;)

I live in Canada not Europe or something lol I have rented servers for many other games before. Americas Army, DayZ, Battlefield, CS. I know what to expect and expecting a ping below 100 is certainly not hoping for a miracle.

Having said that you're correct. HFB does have the lowest prices I've seen and many locations so I'll agree with you there fore sure.

I'm with Telus and have had little trouble with them so far. I have a neighbour whom I play with he has Shaw I believe gets around the same ping as me. However the server is in Seattle. Apparently Chicago is fullup.

Chicago is currently filled and we have a lot of machines on order in this location however we will most likely not arrive until next week due to the holiday messing with our shipping.

I have used them in the past and they are quite good (imho), prices were fair and customer service was always fast and courteous.

OP why not contact HFB directly?

Our HFB rented server has been ddosed for the last two days.

I would avoid HFB if you're planning on running a server which bans hackers and exploiters; chances are one of them will get butthurt and ddos your server into the ground.

If you want you can PM me your ticket # and I can see about having you moved to one of our DDoS protected servers in one of our locations.

Just some extra info for people.

HFBServers do not allow uploading of any .DLL files for "Security Reasons" so if your planing on modifying your server, they are not the provider for you.... just wish i had that info prior to purchasing from them. Lesson Learned!

Im glad you mentioned this, we actually just started allowing the upload of dll's within the past few hours. We still however do not allow access to the server exe.

    Hahahahaha

So I went through all that trouble of contacting support, pinging IP's, and switch to QC Canada. Now the ping on the server is ranging from 120-150. Somewhat disappointing and sad all at the same time, unbelievable.

Anyway, guess I'll be contacting support in the A.M. I'm a little too tired for any more of this tonight.

Can anyone comment on multiplays server performance for Canadians?

They switched the server to QB and the ping is still pretty much exactly the same. I don't know...

Edit: My last reply to support. I'm not being a jerk or anything I'm just utterly disappointed with the service.

The latency is still about the same though. I'm at a loss here.

I've rented servers for many other games before DayZ, Americas Army, Battlefield, Counter-Strike, Minecraft. I've rented them from multiple locations Chicago, New York, Toronto, Quebec, Seattle, DC. And from many different providers like Gameservers, EOReality, etc. Never before have I had latency issues like this especially when renting from servers where I should have at least a decent ping and i'm still getting well above 100. I have a friend who lives in Nova Scotia, relatively close to Quebec and his latency is horrible on my server also. Needless to say I'm very disappointed with the server performance. None of my clan wants to join a server when everyone's latency is high and no one else is joiningg so I can only assume it's bad for most.

    Odd.

We rent a server from HFB, located at the Seattle datacentre, and have had zero issues with them.

Ping is always 40-60 for us. I'm located in British Columbia, another good pal is located in Calgary, and another one of our guys is located in LA (quite a spread in terms of location). None of the regulars have ever complained about ping, either, and service has always been outstanding.

Why would you think you would get better ping to Quebec, than you would to Seattle? And the fact that you are pinging around the same, regardless of location, leads me to believe you are experiencing a rather unique issue.

Did you ever try pinging our server for a reference ping? Sadly we don't have any servers to rent out but it's still good to see what a North American ping SHOULD be for you.

That's my thought as well. Are you with HFB?

Initially I went with Seattle because it was by far the closest. When I seen my latency was 120+ I thought it must just be me. So I got some clan mates to jump on one from right beside me the other from NS. Both have about the same latency as me.

I ask to get switched to Chicago but they say its full. Offer to switch me to LA? Why LA? Weird. So I get them to send a list of locations and ips so I can ping them and Quebec pings well.

I have no problem with my HFB server in Atlanta, GA. Not to mention their service is amazing, tickets get answered within an hour and it's always quite helpful. My ping is usually around 50-60 to my server which is about the best ping I get from anywhere.

We've had HFB for a few weeks now, and as of recently it has been garbage. Our location is Chicago, so I'm guessing it's due to them having too many servers on one box (HFBServers posted above saying they're waiting for more to come in). But it sucks when a company oversells a location and you end up suffering & paying for it. Our server has been crashing at least once a day, and when you open up control panel you get this message, status: unknown. So its not even like you can just give it a RS and it's back, we just have to sit and wait.

*As far as I know this has nothing to do with the ddos*

Same thing here, server located in Seattle... sucks. Sent in a ticket awhile ago as well as messaged their account on here... No response. They were pretty awesome until now, prolly just a glitch in the system. (I Hope)

Mine is also hosted in Seattle, mine went down and looks exactly like this now because someone who was butthurt that I banned them DDoSed the server... if your server was on the same machine then it is likely getting shut down as well.
There are more details on the hacker/exploit thread towards the end.
