It's another shitty DayZ ripoff what did you expect?
DayZ itself is lame and broken.

The biggest Bandit party Ive seen contained 7 people. The biggest village of non-bandit players had about 30 members.
If they have M4s those bandits would be minced meat. And every 2-3 man bandit party would be unable to profit from banditing due to the lack of M4s theyd have.
Start gathering people for a village. Spread out so youre not too vournable in the beginning. Start slowly gathering up your strength and then move into a single village.
Start gathering strength and when you have 10+ M4s/kevlar (doesnt take as long as you think) you can start pushing out.
Build fake-houses you just populate with 10+ people and make those bandits pay.
Find the bandits normal targets and lie in wait in the mountains, when they enter the house go after the bastards. Build houses with obvious easy-entry points on top and hole in the roofs, fill the rooms with spiked walls.
Do whatever you want, remember its and alpha and if the game isnt your cup of tea try it in a month or two :).
I enjoy the pvp and raiding, good times.
The problem comes when we all need to log off eventually. They can come in and 'tunnel' their way into your base to take everything while you are working/sleeping.
What about a method similar to Shadowbane, in that you can only destroy bases between set hours each night.. 6pm till midnight.
This way there is no sneaky raiding during the day/night while people are away and can't defend unless they make it their second job.
Of course during the rest of the time you can kill whoever, just not destroy buildings.
I haven't seen a single person who has struggled who didn't try to settle where they spawned. You spawn in the middle of what we called 'Death Valey' on our server. Just run away, the coast is a good place to get to and settle a sleeping bag at.
Then, as others said, numbers > all. I think that's a great part of the game, and as others have said I've seen settlements starting to form with numerous geared and dedicated players.
Then, my friend, you have been utterly blessed by luck.
I have played on 3 different servers. Based on names from the wiki map I have built houses from north of heisemburg to the southwest coast and further east.
I have been CRUSHED every time, always by night.
We got to end-game gear on this server after I had played for 10 minutes. I ran into a warehouse, found a shotgun, ran out and instantly saw a full kevlar dude running behind a rock trying to mine it. I ran across the field, naked, with a shotgun and blew his head clean off, getting us plans for full kevlar and M4s.
It was a dickish move I grant you, but the 6 of us needed his kevlar more than he did :).
I love this game, but theres just some certain things that needs to be fixed, and balanced, and as long as people can have civil discussions about them I would think the devs, whos probably spending hours upon hours with trying to think of ways to better the game, would only be thankful for it.
Well, i guess the servers you frequent are better than the uk or Europe ones.
You cant gather people for a village, people are too frightened to co operate or they just KOS, maybe for the same reason. And if all were doing is building m4's for a showdown, then i might aswell break out BF4 without all the tediousness involved of collecting resources, die... collect some more, die again...
Surely removing the capacity for people to be so aggressive would be much better. IMO their is no need for such powerfull weapons in game. Of course we want weapons but i think they should be limited to encourage community growth and give more to than just get an M4 then kill or be killed.
If for instance we only had bows and arrows (just an example) You cant kill so easy with that. Your more likely to settle with a group and help each other, because your less likely to die 20 times before actually getting anywhere. people would be more co-operative. People could build proper forts or bases. That would then encourage huge base raids with 30 people on each team or so.
Its no fun spending hours gathering stuff to build something to be killed over and over without really getting anywhere. It seems im better off getting this M4 and then to hell with everything else the game has to offer.
I cant tell you were safe, I cant tell you we wont have to relocate, I cant tell you that you wont die or that you wont have to gather rediculous ammounts of recourses.
I can however well you that youre welcome to join us at [EU]Noobs welcome PVP/SLEEP server if you sort your attitude and join our... well I guess you can call it appartment complex :).
And I think youve gotten something wrong mate. Carrying around an M4 and kevlar makes you MORE prone to attacks.
People want them items dude.
Trust me, my rock must be very very special.. because they all seem to want that too! :)
Sooner or later youll get your M4, and then youll have to make new choices. Because however mad you are, you cant solo snipe a bandit team.
Exactly, i get killed then have to start again... no fun :).
It was pointed out you can play how you want, do what you want.
''The idea behind Rust is that we give you stuff to use and it's up to you how to use it. We're not forcing you to play it a certain way, you make the experience.''
Though all people keep telling me is to meta-game else im a nub. Doesn't quite fit. I HAVE to find a group, we HAVE to work together. somethings amiss somewhere...
Maybe if i could go far away on the map i could invite a couple of freinds and we can set up our own little camp.. oh wait.. i cant? Theirs no resources that far to do that? but you just said... agh.
Ok, so ill move onto somewhere else, try that.. oh wait , i just got raided and killed over and over by someone else instead...
Ok, so im gonna build my own fort and live in this, maybe help some passers by. What?? Its been destroyed while ive been logged off? man...
I give up! ill just go over to these nice friendly looking people and see if i can hel...oh, killed again. I guess not.
Surely you see my point? I know im not the only one with these problems, they are on the forums, they are on the steam review page, they are all ingame.
Anyway, ive made point lol. So ill shut up now. Ill just sit tight and wait to see what direction this game goes in. I would love to see it mature into something good and if it does i can see myself sinking quite a few hours into it.
Anarchy as a mechanic is never a justification. The game is a game, and for it to be enjoyable to most there has to be a set ammount of balance. There have to be some rules, and well crafted ones. That is the concept of a game.
If you want a game where you can do anything, make sure that in the process the majority is not prevented from doing everything.
Part of makin the game as free as the developers intended is, in part, making sure that freedom isn't actually turning into no freedom at all. All of this can be made through clever mechanics and balance.
Imo most people aren't asking for the game to change, they aren't asking the devs to make a different game.
They want PvP and raiding, but the game is in alpha and many are reaching to the conclusion that for this to work in favor of everyone and the game itself, some mechanics need to be added to prevent widespread griefing. People are speaking their mind, and trying to give feedback. this is not only expected, is a positive thing.
If you haven't already uninstalled the game, my best advice would be to find a really low pop server to experience the whole progression with.
If you don't want to lose all your players, you can DEFINITELY find places to build houses where nobody is. First all, fucking SCOUT your locations man... I can't fucking communicate to you new guys how important that is. Knowing if there is a megabase near you is 100% fucking everything. Do it.
Nextly, put your house in a fucking rock mountainside, raiders dont have the patience or nuts to go wandering around in a mountain side where some naked dude with a pistol can get the drop on them. So they just wander around in forests where they have terrain advantage / can get any poor fuckers houses in said forest. Once you have a secure house, DONT BURN ANYTHING AT NIGHT
Maybe i shouldve said that earlier, this game makes your house a fucking christmas tree if you burn fire / furnace at night. never do it if you're actually trying hard to survive.
Final step is to keep trying, if you arn't prepared to lose your shit in a hardcore survival game then you're right, it's time to hop back on hello kitty online: the brony expansion pack
Addition to this :
DO NOT BUILD A HOUSE WHERE PEOPLE CAN JUMP ON TOP OF IT FROM THE MOUNTAIN BESIDE IT.
Been there, done that.
Never again.
What the fuck? I get banned 3 days for posting a macro'd image and this guy from the Facepunch staff is allowed to do it?
You are all fucking hypocritical assholes, that's for sure.
I'm gonna screencap this and put it on my review of this game.
Since there are people who KoS naked folks as soon as they appear; let's just agree that KoS is simply the way it is on the PvP servers
You have to weather the bad times out and get more experienced with the game to enjoy the good times. I've hit the top and bottom, and whenever I do hit the bottom I know the top will come back around eventually if I keep going and not quit like a wienie. If you can't accept the fact that you will get stomped a fair percentage of this game and that if people want to play this like a FPS they are more than welcome to, then you probably shouldn't play it.
Rust is your journey, Make your choice for it may be your last
These games are defined by dying and restarting. You will die. It's how you learn. As an alpha, though, there's not a lot to do aside from kill people. There will be more to do.
It's very hard solo - even with a single buddy, you're way better off.
Honestly, this game is not worth the money even if its still only in alpha.
to those who are reading, please do not buy this game unless its on steam 75%+ off sale.
The best defense is a good offense.
unfortunately if thats the attitude of everyone then you will be left to play the game on your own. It will turn into a niche product for the elitists or whatever you feel like calling yourselves and will eventually disapear as another one of 'them' games.
Speak for yourself, this game has a lot of potential if done right and is well worth the dirt cheap price.
I guess he was meant to say.
Buy it only if you wish to help fund and promote the concept. If you wish to play it at current time, then dont bother.
To be expected with any Alpha, I gave them my money because I think this has great potential as a true survival game, hopefully the devs will listen to a few of our suggestions and we can all enjoy this game at its true potential.
An investment, i guess why many topics get quite heated :).
If you do not like the gameplay you could always go play WarZ er..... maybe DayZ errr......... maybe Nether errr.........
This is a genre of game. If you do not like the genre then stop buying games of this stature. Could you imagine if I went onto the World of Warcraft forums and said the game is shit because of "all the magic spells and fantasy nonsense", or if I went onto the minecraft forums and said how all the building and construction is "cluttering up the map" and ruining the game. Steam shows Rust to have 8,000 players actively on average. If you have a problem with the gameplay I suggest you find another title to invest your time in because a great deal of players are very happy with the development so far.
I'm not an elitist, I just don't quit whenever conflict arises like a lot of the people that are currently complaining in this thread
@insightknight
Except your comparison doesn't make the least amount of sense. This is akin to people playing world of Warcraft in its early days and complaining some skills and characters or mechanics where overpowered and should be balanced... And that happened. And the characters or mechanics were balanced in patches.
This game is in alpha, people will give feedback and things will change, is that simple.
They're already planning on removing military weapons which is nice.
At the moment this game may seem harse. But remember it's alpha guys. Once oyu have a house you can respawn there non stop, all your items are there, kevlar is the easiest armor to make it takes about 200 metal scraps... not hard and i guarantee a lot more armor and weapons will come, M4 is also easy to make. So with one research kit you can learn everything and make it all easy. The main issue is griefing with buildings. It need to be fixed because it takes hours to get your house set up just to log out of the game without thinking i hope i don't die while i'm gone.
You are complaining about being gunned down in a survival game. What part of the analogy did you not comprehend? As you said the WoW players asked for balance, not to completely remove spells and abilities.
By that mentality, they have guns in a survival game. Why not a tank? or a gunship? Must be some still around right? Maybe some nuclear warheads still around aswell? :)
Have you ever played dead space? Survival does not mean simply lacking technology. You need to expand your view of what it means to survive instead of thinking like a dumbass american who has lost thier smartphone.
EDIT: Just noticed you are in UK. :P
No one ever did? But why wouldnt they add tanks and gunships or nuclear warheads? You would still be surviving. You can play Arma or BF4 and technically have a definition of a survival game.
When i saw this game i saw cavemen running around with rocks having to craft whatever they could use to build a base and survive with freinds.. ray mears style. I didnt realise it was another dayz, nether, warz clone. If i knew that i wouldnt have bought it. Theirs already too many of the same old thing about. And if thats all it is, then theirs nothing new here.
sorry.
Things will change. For the better too. Will take some time as we have a lot to do :)
I accually agree here. When I saw this on steam I saw hachets, rocks, pin dick cavemen etc and it looked really unique. Now not saying I dont like how the game is I accually love it, but would be nice to see it be different and stick with how it represents. Why do we fucking start naked and with rock and torchs if theres machine guns, stone towns and advanced armor wears out? Legit makes no sense
Okay that I can understand. Although they do show gunfire and modern clothes in the Trailer, it is still rather cryptic without actually watching a stream of the gameplay. Not trying to attack you I am just tired of seeing the same post every day. If a person is not satisfied with the gameplay of a game it is much easier to find a new game than to picket for the entire gameplay model to be rewritten simply because they do not like it. A majority of these players have not logged more than 24 hours of gameplay as well so they have not even experienced having a metal building and actually being able to defend themselves instead of being fresh meat for those who have.
This is not a DayZ clone, read about what Devs have planned, the Zombies are just place holders for another hostile NPC and they intend to replace most Military weapons with more primitive options.
Rust certainly has DayZ inspiration though. The Metal Hangar is a dead giveaway. :D
Yeah i understand what you are saying. but i think most people, or at least the ones thats came from steam like me had the same conceptions of the game. But when you actually play and within the first couple of hours get no where but bum raped by guys weilding machine guns it kind of takes away all that immersion. i would try explain better but im tired :).
@Montyrat
Where is this information? I wouldnt mind reading it. i cant find it on steam or their website. Maybe this should be made more easily accesable by the devs!
https://trello.com/b/lG8jtz6v/rust
I also suggest that people join "No PVP" servers if thats what you want to do, learn how to play the game properly before getting spanked in a PVP one.
