I'm not an expert by any means but I do know a thing or two about surviving.

This is a noobs guide and is meant for noobs, if you're a vet then I ask that if you feel something is off to correct me and I'll edit the post

I highly recommend you read this whole guide before starting then reading it again as you do it.

    Day 1
You want to spend 95% of this day gathering rocks and wood, mostly rocks. (Do not get wood from trees, only log piles. It takes to long to get it from trees and wastes to much hunger) You also want to kill two pigs or three small animals (chicken and rabbit) Try not to walk into rads, there are normally zombies, players, and hostile animals. What you want to build first is a stone hatchet, shelter, door, and hunting bow. Those are listed in order of importance. The hunting bow will primarily be used for hunting animals, not players. (Unless you're a badass then by all means take out some bandits with a bow) If you're not a badass with the bow then start by learning how it works by practicing on animals like dear, pigs, and chicken. This task normally bleeds into day 2.

    Day 2
You want to use the bow you made and gather food, your primary targets are still dear and pig until you have a feel with the bow then start going for wolfs, bears, and zombies. (Wolves take two shots, bears take four shots, and zombies take 1-2) Keep gathering rocks until you've got enough for a furnace, while also gathering wood. (Do not be quick to use all your stones on arrows, you need a furnace) Food, rocks, wood in order of importance. during the night if you've found enough rocks make a furnace and start cooking metal fragments and sulfur) This task may bleed into day 3. If you have a lot of cloth from killing animals all day start making yourself some clothes. (preferably vest and pants to keep you from getting cold)

    Day 3
With the metal fragments that you've made and the wood that you've been storing you can now make a hatchet. This gathers 10 wood per hit on a wood pile. Today you start making the foundations of your base. If you had enough metal fragments for a 9mm then go ahead and make one, use the rest of your fragments for bullets (9mm bullets are made from gunpowder and metal fragments; gunpowder is made from sulfur and charcoal) Use this gun only for emergencies like other players, bears, or wolves in packs. (Players take four hits unarmored, bears take 8 hits, wolves take four hits) Wood, cloth, stone in order of importance.

    Day 4 - Infinity
Do what you think needs to be done now. Think you need a better gun? Try going to the town with your trusty 9mm and try and find some blueprints. Kill zombies all the time and see if you get a research kit. Finish your base. It's not about survival anymore, it's about living how you want to live. Go and save people, go and kill those people who needs saving. Who cares? (Probably the guys you killed) By this time you should be ready to make it out in the scary world of pvp and maybe even stand a chance.

    Additional information

Research kits: This will be your best friend. They can be used over and over without losing them and are used to learn how to craft things without a blueprint (So long as you've got the item you'd like to learn to make) I HIGHLY recommend you use one of your paper to research paper so you'll never run out of paper to research with.

    Hunting bows:
These are going to be your primary weapon until you find and/or make an assault rifle. By that point your primary weapon will be the 9mm, while only using the assault rifle for emergencies.

To lost animals: Ran into a horde of zombies, a pack of wolves, a flock of bears? (Yes a flock, because fuck you that's why) Well losing them might be tricky, bears you can just run for a minute and they'll loose interested. Zombies and wolves however, are harder. The best way I've found is to try to get them stuck on objects in the game and get your happy ass out of there before they can get unstuck, thus, loosing interest.

This guide will not guarantee you'll survive 100% but it will make sure you don't die from causes that could be helped if the right repercussions were token.

You forgot the most important tip of all when dealing with bears and wolves. They're completely defeated by large rocks.

This is pretty much how I learned to play, with one little exception that after I have bow and enough arrows (and cooked chicken) I go hunting zombies first (also have enough bandages as zombies hits you from ~10 meters so if you miss your first shot you can get hit).

If you find a good spot where zombies respawn you can get a lot of blueprints, food, ammo and other stuff. Don't be afraid to run into towns, just watch for radiation not to exceed 500. Obviously, if you see another player get out of there quick. :)

I pretty much do the same thing when I first start, was thinking of suggesting something similar but then the guide says how to survive rust not "how to take big risks and maybe get lucky and grab some great loot early" XD

If it adds to survival then why not. :)

The way I'm thinking is that at the beginning you have nothing to loose (life is cheap in game) so taking risks for big gains is worth it, e.g sometimes you can get full leather armour from zombies in like 20 minutes, plus gun like MP5/M4 so you have much better chance defending yourself against violent players :)

And also you get important blueprints like metal door pretty quickly as building house with wooden door is almost pointless.

Shacks are waste of time. What you want to do fist 20 minutes is go into rad zone, get p250, learn every blueprint available, then shoot some poor bastard, and build 1x1 somwhere really hidden.

This seems really useful, but what about when you enter the server at night, do things change, given that you have such low visibility? Make sure you outline that.

    Edited:

Rad zone can be a large risk to a new player. Shacks are easier to build than a full house too, but it still gives you some shelter and somewhere to hide out. you are wrong, all wrong.

This whole guide is wrong, I'm not saying it won't work, but after the first day in every wipe I've had full kevlar/m4 with a 3x3x5 at least.

Now here is how you start in this game : You have 2 choices at the beginning either kill zombies with a rock until you have the metal door and m4 or go to a rad town get a pistol and kill some players for their ressources and do the zombie part later that day. I recommend the following instead : kill zombies when you have the metal door and m4 you go somewhere quite you make a 1x1 with 2 doorways with 2 metal doors(wood while the metal ore are cooking in the furnace). 2 doors to be able to extend the building in a 3x3 or 4x4 or w/e you want to build. When that is done, make the m4 go kill players keep building, you will end up killing players with kevlar by the end of that day and have a great house. If everything went well at this point you are 1 of the strongest in the server, biggest house or 1 of them in the whole server.

For example, yesterday me and my team did this in bmfc or w/e it's named, we have everything already and made 9 c4 that in the same day, now we have the option to raid 1 of the biggest other house in the server which will help us snowball even more. That way you are always too big for the amount of c4 ppl have on average. GG.

The idea is it is a general guide for the first few days in rust, it is low-risk compared to what you are suggesting, which is high-risk-high-reward. If you want to get established really quickly, then yes, that is absolutely the way to go, but if you want to take it slow and better ensure your survival, OP's guide is very useful.

Actually you are wrong, it's simple the players like me will raid your little shack over and over again, a wooden door is too easy. Following this guy guide will just be a pain in the ass, you will have to start over and over again and then you'll come make a post whining about how hard it is to get started. Not
necessarily talking to you but you get the point.

Don't get me wrong, I understand what you mean exactly, but the fact of the matter is, no matter which way you play, you really can't lone-wolf it. However if you even want to make the attempt, the OP's guide is probably the better strategy, in the long run. Assuming you have a partner or a few teammates, likely following your advice would be more beneficial.

Uhm where is the part you missed this was a guide for noobs? You think someone who just bought the game and entering a server for first time will be able to pull this off?
The guide Darkreaper put up is perfect, if you want to put up guide for veterans and so on make a new thread...

That's the way I've always done it since the beginning, true enough the first wipe I didn't have a huge house like I do now nor have full kevlar but this path is the easiest and fastest way to success. making a box and a shack is just asking for kev dudes to rape you over and over again. or anyone with a p250 that is.

You should make a guide on your way. It could attract the more advanced players, and it could help them out. I'm being 100% serious, I'd like to read a guide on the brief post you've already made in this forum.

A little edit to the starting post that is pretty important in my opinion:

Day 1: While you're practicing with your bow you should get a lot of cloth from the animals. Use this cloth (15) to make yourself a bed. When a badass comes and kills you, you choose camp respawn and you will respawn on your bed. Keep in mind that there is a 4 minute cooldown on your bed.

    Day2:
during the night if you've found enough rocks make a furnace and start cooking metal fragments and sulfur)
During the night you should NEVER light your fireplace or furnace. On populated servers this will easily attract roaming hostiles and they will come knock your door down with force. At daytime your fires will be a lot harder to spot.

    I'm in agreement with Kong.

    Here is my way:
    Kill a pig or two.
Farm a single pile of wood.
Farm a single pile of rocks.
    Craft a bow.
    Craft 3 sets of arrows.
Kill people and zombies. Whichever you see first.
Don't forget to craft more arrows. This can be a problem.... :|

If you can't aim, don't worry. Bow is super strong. Just get close and you'll hit them if you have eyes.

You missed the sleeping bag after bow so you don't lose your house. Yes i said lose because if you just started playing and you die you will probably not find your house for a while.

I usually rush for settlements and zombies after I get a shelter, sleeping bag and enough food (maybe day 2) because I find it pointless to start building a 1x1 without metal door. If I get any weapons from crates or zombies I usually just use them to keep killing zombies and speed up the process of getting the door. If I get killed I keep going at it, I like to think there's no storage when you don't have a metal door.

Unless you have a fully metal building and people watching all the time, you're very far from any type of safety or long term storage.

I genuinely believe a player will learn a lot more in his first few hours/days of playing by raiding, killing and getting blueprints than he will by trying to farm resources or build a base. Once you raid your first base, you realize how easy it is for bases to be raided. Learning that aspect of fragility is important.
