Backpacks seem to despawn awfully quickly. I died a few times wandering around on a low population server (3 others on at the time) and was able to make it back to my death spot in every case within a couple minutes, and the backpack had despawned.

Is it tied to how many people are on the server or maybe in the vicinity of where you die? If there is no one around, does it go away faster?

It's a static rate of 10 minutes if I recall correctly, or it disappears if someone takes everything in the bag.

Thanks, Helk, maybe I was underestimating how long it was taking me to get back.

Just posting here to see if the static 10 min timer was changed since this post or if it's just buggy.

I have noted several occasions where the bag disappears much quicker than 10min and a few where it actually lasts much longer than 10 minutes.

While testing it today (by jumping out of my base to my death and then keeping an eye on the bag until it goes away) I had 2 instances where the bag disappeared in approximately 5 min and 2 where it lasted closer to 15 minutes. Is it just a random number between 2 values that determines how long the bag will stay?

Do you know if there are any modifiers to this beyond the bag being looted? For example, if someone opens the bag, but doesn't take all (or any) of the loot, does it reset the timer, or does it have no effect on it?

    Just out of curiosity.

From my vague testing (that wasn't actually testing... just what I noticed) I believe the timer is reset when someone opens the bag...
I could be wrong. Someone correct me plz lol

At the very least, I think it adds some time after you leave the bag. I've had to wait over 10 minutes for people to come back to their bag, during which I had it open. It did not immediately despawn when I left the bag, so I think it either adds to the time, resets the time, or simply freezes the timer while you're accessing the bag. Kind of curious which it is, though.

I would also like to understand backpacks better. I fell to my death and it took me just over 8 minutes to get back to the fall site. No backpack. I then set a sleeping bag on the cliff and jumped off. Respawn at camp. No backpack. Jump again. No Backpack. "Suicide" in console. Backpack! So it seems that backpacks do not work properly with fall damage at least when falling onto steep terrain. I have heard of people intentionally jumping from towers onto level terrain and finding their backpacks. They also found that they disappeared 5-15 minutes later rather than a stable 10 minutes.

Devs--the game is unforgiving--we like that! But it is easier to deal with the consequences when we know what they are. If I know how long my pack will stay around--even if that is just a range--then I can decide whether I should suicide run across the entire map or just start over where ever I respawn.

I really like this game. I am even creating an extensive Rust Web site which will be superior to playrustwiki.com for quality of content. I just want more information on what to expect out of the gameplay so I can adjust my expectation and gameplay accordingly.
