I'm having the same problem. Game starts, I see a grey background and company logo. Game crashes to desktop. I've tried a variety of resolutions and settings, as well as using the DEV branch. Nothing helps.
My system - 2013 Macbook Air, Intel Core i7, 8Gigs Ram OSX Maverick.

Update: Ok, that was my own dumb fault. I was unintentionally blocking rust from connecting to the net (I use a local firewall called TCPBlocker). That's fixed. But now I'm getting the same 'waiting for character' hangs as others on the thread. Just to be clear - I can hear the game, but not see it, it just sits on loading waiting for character forever. Extremely frustrating.
