I get a issue occasionally when looking at players/npcs that makes them a giant black wall, and when i look at them it blacks out my screen. I also tend to see through the ground and see the ocean beneath the map. I'll post some pictures the next time this happens to me.
Running an Intel i3 2.93Ghz CPU, 6GB Ram, and AMD Radeon 7700 GPU.
Same problem as in this video:

Card Model: Radeon 7970 HD 3 GB
OC or Stock: Stock
Problem/Bug: Massive unplayable tearing/artifacts
GPU Usage: not sure
Artifacts are back now that I logged in,can't for the love of me figure out whats causing it..
I'm getting this really badly on the steam client. I dunno if it's related but my game is also crashing :( Needless to say I have an AMD card.
I think I've fixed it by messing around with catalyst, I changed the following options under "Gaming>3D Application Settings"
Catalyst A.I: setting "Enable Surface format optimization" to false
Tessellation: changing "AMD Optimized" to "use application settings"
I changed them both at the same time, so I'm not sure which one fixed the problem, But making those changes seemed to fix the problem for me.
I'll update you guys if the problems re-surface.
EDIT: I've been playing for the last 30 mins or so like this with no additional problems.
EDIT2: I can confirm this only fixes it on "fastest" settings.
EDIT3: It has completely stopped working for me, once again artifacting everywhere
I'm going to test this right now and edit this post to see if it worked.
EDIT: Seems like this works! I haven't had any FPS drops in any direction or any rock artifacting at all! I did test going on 2 servers, dying on one of them also.
Another thing that I noticed is that the artifacting begins after your first death. So at the start it works just fine, after you get killed it all begins.
thank you everyone for the support and feedback.
as for disabling grass, i tried this right away when min/maxing the graphics settings with no change to the severity of artifacts.
The ""Enable Surface format optimization"" seems to be working for me so far. The Tessellation did not work at all. I tried each one separate. Good looking out Pwnage McBill.
Edit: Nevermind. As soon as I type that I went back into game and it started tearing with artifacts.
Ah, that's a shame, it's been running smoothly for me since I changed them, If It makes a difference I've been playing on lowest settings, and I have a Radeon 7770
No graphics artifacts here (HD5xxx series) but performance is quite bad still. The switch to Steam didn't do anything for me unfortunately. Optimizations are desperately needed! The grass and the newly added rocks have made the game next to unplayable for me. And if you look through the forum posts you will see that I am not alone with this.
Turning off the grass via the console switch alleviates the problem but it's a workaround at best and it's quite hard to understand for me why this hasn't been addressed properly, yet. I feel like with all the new content on the horizon, important work on performance has taken a step back. I sincerely hope that this will change in the future and that we will see some focus on back end work.
I have worse FPS on the client then on the webplayer
Pwnage McBill's will be added to OP for more exposure. seems to have helped a few people (myself not included sadly)
good work bill
Thanks, you may want to include the fact that it only works on fastest settings, I'm checking now to see if it will work on higher settings with grass disabled.
I tryed it with and without grass I happens with both.
I also get the OP issue.
Only started to get this with the last update (implementation of the rocks).
AMD radeon HD 7800 series card
I also cant use fullscreen, just blackscreen and when i check the running processes rust is not responding.
Also, in windowed, i cant see the whole game in the screen, right at the bottom of the screen i cant see. Even thou im using desktop resolution settings. This bit only happens using steam, fine in webplayer.
The following did not help, if anything, worse:

hmm if it only works on lowest settings then that leads me to believe its just lowering the stress on the card so it doesn't run at max.. probably some leaks or something that is causing the amd cards to max out on nothing..
fix the leak, fix the artifact because card will always have problem if its pushed to 99%
I have a Sapphire HD 7950, non-oc'ed, running catalyst 13.4
Insane artifacting, so bad sometimes that my game crashes. When it stops artifacting I get crazy lag when looking at one 90 degree portion of the map.
GPU runs at 99% constantly, but only like 2gb of ram and 20% cpu usage.
same problem. radeom HD 7750 1GB stock. i think its a texture bug idk. but it needs to be fixed :P
I was hoping to get an answer from devs in this thread, so we know they are fully aware of the problem.
garry replied in this thread asking about disabling grass... they know about it and are taking care of it.
I have messed around with the catalyst but nothing seems to be fixing it. It has nothing to do with the grass at all. I believe it has to do with dynamic lighting of the sun and moon after death or getting in the game. It seems to be only in their direction. I get great fps just severe artifacting. Sometimes I can play without any issues for a while but then they start up again. The fix that Bill posted may only be by chance that it worked but it is far from a fix.

Is there any other console commands we can mess with?
ATI 7850 2GB
MAJOR artifacting. Like so bad that I have to look at the floor, because if I look up, artifacting starts, and builds up until it's so bad I can't see anything.
Also eventually the floor goes invisible and I can see the seaboxes below.
I don't know if it has been discussed here, but I changed my resolution on launch to 1366x768 and windowed mode, and it completely removed the lag and artifacting.
Hd Radeon 3gb 7900 Series here. Been having display crash error since webplayer. After game went on steam, I am getting artifacts now. Card runs at 60+ Celcius at about 45% cooling. Most game that are heavy on my card keep it at 45-50 degrees. Game has too much toll on the card.
I will give it a try
Same problem here.
Card Model: Radeon 7870 2 GB
OC or Stock: Stock
Problem/Bug: same as video in windowed mode, can't click anything in fullscreen.
GPU Usage: goes up and down.
Hey guys.. can you try running with any of these command lines.. to see if they make a difference.
-force-opengl (Windows only)
Make the editor use OpenGL for rendering, even if Direct3D is available. Normally Direct3D is used but OpenGL is used if Direct3D 9.0c is not available.
-force-d3d9 (Windows only)
Make the editor use Direct3D 9 for rendering. This is the default, so normally there's no reason to pass it.
-force-d3d11 (Windows only)
Make the editor use Direct3D 11 for rendering.
I could try this but Australia servers are down.
There is nothing better when the Devs are actively helping you with issues. It's nice and refreshing. Thanks Garry.
Can someone test ASAP and let me know so i can build up excitement for when i get home from work.
Also Zaccie this is irrelevant, If you really want to help this thread go test on another server.
Nope, no change for me using the commands. Still MAJOR fps problems and massive artifacting. Also recently started getting really common crashes in both windowed and fullscreen.
I have an Hd 7950, no oc, with catalyst 13.14 drivers.
OpenGL
- Made the games startup time much longer, as well as join server time.
- No more artifacting ( 5 min of play)
- Still lag when looking towards the north
Dx9
- Opened up in normal time, connected to server normally
- Removed artifacting (5 minutes of play)
- Much less lag while looking north, instead of 2-3 fps, maybe 30-40. Still not the 100+ I get while lookinn elsewhere.
Dx11
- Normal load times
- No artifacting at first, resumed after 2-3 minutes.
- No lag at all until the artifacting resumed, then it lagged down to 3 fps lookign to the north agian.
Overall, Dx9 seemed to actually make full-screen 1080p playable, instead of having to play in a 720p window. I did not play long enough to record gpu usage or heat levels.
I found something that worked for me. I downloaded the 13.11 V8 Beta drivers from AMD and the glitches stopped. Not claiming it will work for you but.... worth a try.
How long have you 'tested' this with the new drivers? Does it completely solve the artifacting or just FPS?
If it has solved it. What is your exact graphic set-up. I.e Awesome level, Resolution. Fastest - Beautiful.
If you have tinkered with CCC?
Edit #2
If this link isn't allowed, I apologize.
http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-arti...dows-beta.aspx
Gives some more information on what the new Beta drivers do. Seems heavily based around the new GPU's and BattleField but it might be worth a shot.
I will stick to 12.1 drivers, thanks, they work the best for me so far.
About 20 minutes now. For about the first 10 to 15 min 0 artifacting. Now a little bit but playable. Everything down with forced texture on. But i have been playing with the awesomness settings not sure it makes a difference. 1920x1080 not tinkered with ccc
Cheers for the zero input.
I have an amd 7950 same problems .
I have tried everything listed here reinstalled all drivers ect
got it to stop artifacting for up to 10 mins
