I think rust is popular because of the differnce this is to other games. People love survival games/zombie games. These types of games are getting very popular in the gaming world. This game is very easy to start playing for hours upon hours. Most people like this game because of crafting, resource gathering, base building, and especially PvP. This game has many to offer like teaming up, Clan wars and battles. There is also a strategic part of this game like when you're going to raid.
If this game is good now just imagine how good it will be in the future.

The game isn't good now mate. I'm really not sure why we've had ten thousand reddit/4chan/9gag members rush in since June/July. The game is way too overhyped by the community.
In conclusion, it's popular but not worthy of the cringeworthy posts made by those desperate to obtain a key.

Its only popular because you are on a forum sub section for Rust. Go to some other game forum and tell me if rust is popular there.

People love the mix between those games. But in my opinion it's nothing like dayZ you only say it's like minecraft because of the crafting (Did minecraft make crafting) I don't think so. It is only a little bit related to stalker

It so much different things rolled into the same game,
you have survival, crafting, building, pvp etc etc
It's great to spectate and stream.
It's very noticeable and apparent done by gamers for gamers, they know there shit.
Most of the whine and sarcasm is made by those who cant get access.
I have not played it, but after more than 30+ years of gaming,
this group with Garry has the potential to make a kick ars game

You'll find that before Facepunch was plagued with thousands of new members in the recent months, a lot of us easily acquired rust keys (You just had to type in 000000) and didn't really find it exciting. Most members (esp. golds) with a join date before June '13 have played it afaik

Coverage in gaming media and scarcity of key availability I reckon coupled with people wanting to play DayZ due to playthroughs but being unwilling to pay for it
Rust itself looks like it could definitely blossom into something fantastic however.

672 PostsI dont understand how people who have never played a game can say that is amazing and fun, its like people saying sex is amazing who are virgins, or people saying its hard to kill someone when they have never killed someone, or people saying that a movie is shit when they have never seen a movie, or people saying that x is y when they havent even z!

They're judging a book by it's cover, with the book being Rust and the cover being the Let's Plays on Youtube.

This game does seem to have quite the potential on the other hand, I just hope the right team makes such a game.

But watching a Let's Play on Rust does give you a general idea of the game.

General idea doesn't mean much if you didn't play the game yourself. There have been instances where the game looks amazingly fun from a LP view, but it's actually boring as fuck.

I'm going to have to point this one out as to why it's so popular.
I mean, the appeal of it for most people is because people generally want access to something they can't be a part of. Unfortunately, many of the users that want access are too young to just let it go and recognize that it's their own hype they built up rather than the alpha itself.

Luckly its a closed Alpha the hype will go away and with time the 12 year olds, and when that happens they will hopefully reopen it to members of forum and then close it just before next hype wave :P

Because youtubers and streamers makes it looks fun and great, and people "LOVE" survival games (Even though its just PvP)
I heard the game is really boring and repetetive though.

I think most of the 12 year olds that are dying to play it will quit if they ever get in, once they lose an inventory of stuff to someone.
Or they will cry hacks and post about it on the forums.
