So there used to be this web based zombie survival game, which I can't remember the name of...

Anyway, I know there's a bunch of "zombie survival" games going around, but I feel like this could be brought up for Rust, since it has zombies in it and doesn't have a clear goal (at the moment) other than to survive.

In this unnamed web based zombie survival game, everyone started out as humans, except for a few randomly selected players. The human's goal were to collect various items scattered throughout the area that would ultimately lead to the researching of a cure for the zombies. Once the cure was found, the humans instantly won, and a new game would begin. Or they just had to kill all the zombies, or make them human again with some temporary cure thing or something.
Humans would have to leave buildings and scavenge for food/batteries/radios/etc to survive.

The zombie's goal was to simply either kill all the humans, or turn them all into zombies. Pretty simple. I think the web based zombie game had a special zombie class that could sniff out humans (like the last human alive so games don't last forever), so I imagine that zombies would have some kind of special ability that would let them "see" humans from afar.

I would like to see this kind of gameplay with Rust in the future. It already has the crafting mechanic, which could be used to research a cure for the zombie infestation. Instead of choosing random humans at the start of a "game", any player that died from a zombie NPC would become a zombie. And I suppose that if a human died from another human, they would just respawn as a human. And if they died as a zombie, they would respawn as a zombie.

There could also be an "infection" level, like the hunger bar and radiation bar.

Just throwing the thought out there...

Garry is going to replace zombies with something else because zombies are overused.

What about.. crazed dementia-fueled survivors. People who have gone insane and are now just wild savages who kill on sight.. also they're highly radiated from all the toxic around certain areas of the map.

Better than zombies and way more believable.

Garry wants Rust to be more like Stalker, so intead of zombies we'll have various kinds of mutants and things like that. But the complete point of the game is the interaction between players.

Doesn't feel like a persistent world to me if it's just going to be reset every time a cure is found.

Also getting turned into a zombie would suck... A lot. You are stuck as a zombie and have lost access to a large part of the game if all you can do is kill players. While you are continuously headshotted you gotta wait until other players find a cure for you and you can't even help them. In fact since your only purpose now is to kill them, you're actually working against yourself every time you kill one. But all of this is irrelevant anyway since zombies are temporary.

Hostile animals could fit. Packs of wolves could operate in place of the zombies right out of the box. Expanded further, a few wolves could rotate the map slowly, making random attacks a part of survival.

*words that make no sense in relation to Rust at all*
So basically what you're saying is for Garry to scrap the entire game, throw away the engine, and start over from scratch and make a completely new game? Not a single thing you've said goes with the plan for Rust that Garry has. Nor would it ever make sense at all in any context but a modded server post-release.

Mogs, sorry. But when someone suggests something completely out of the vein of the game and basically it's entire vision, it's worth pointing out.

Well no need to apologize. It was a great read and really good insight to the game itself. I myself never knew that the concept was much broader than the whole DayZ approach, so I'm thanking you for that post:).

I'd fuck off zombies and other once-were-human beasts alltogether and instead have overly irritated bears, wolves, etc.
