What about the cars scattered around in the Left 4 Dead series? Those are mainly cubemap shaders and they don't look awful in the slightest bit.
Cars just look dull and terrible without any reflection.

Because the reflection maps in games like Forza 4 actually look good. In Source the reflection maps are all distorted and awkward.

I don't own L4D or L4D2 so I couldn't comment. But I'm more interested in the geometry of the car and the gestalt of things than it being reflective. If I could make it work and be happy with it I'd love to use in game reflection but it just doesn't look right to me.

If you ask me, this looks actually quite decent.
That's in part because people don't cubemap their maps very well.
But yeah source is pretty old these days. And doesn't have reflections designed for mega beauty like a lot of racing games do. The biggest problem with source is that it's currently missing phong tint maps.
Whoa, that whatever-it-is looks pretty damn awesome, I'll agree. Of course I think you're right about the cubemaps and I'd assume that creature has better ones than the Aventador does. That's one reason I'm still hoping for HL3 because an overhaul of Source Engine would be awesome. Too bad garrysmod wasn't originally for cryengine, while I imagine there's an infinite amount of complications to go with it, Cryengine would be kickass for what we're doing.
Garry's Mod on Cryengine would be just swell.
