So I listened to this interview of Elon Musk by Wired and at the end Elon said he has designs for and might be releasing information about their next generation of rockets, ones that could send people to Mars.

SpaceX is going to be so amazing once they get their next gen rockets and dragon going. Supposedly it'll be able to land on any solid surface in the solar system.

I wonder if SpaceX has a bigger budget than NASA when it comes to shooting up rockets.
I.e excluding all the other NASA stuff.

What to paint this weekend

It's the only Saturn V to be launched at night.
Didn't get more then 30 minutes of progress done before I went to bed but it's a weekend so woopie, tomorrow I'll cover some ground and work on it

Space really is fascinating to me. I'll be going to an observatory in Scotland when I'm on holiday during the summer, so I'm excited for that. Will be interesting to see what happens up in the big beyond over the next 10 years.

Not necessarily. In that time, we created a reusable launch system (regardless of the fact that it failed in its intended purpose and it turns out that expendable launch systems are actually just as cost effective, if not more so), and we used it to create and maintain a constant human presence in space.
People have been in constant orbit around the earth for I think most, if not all of my life so far, either on the ISS or on Mir. So I think that's pretty cool, it's something.

I mean we haven't advanced any frontiers in the last three decades. We did the equivalent of building a treehouse when we should have been moving out for college.

Yeah I think the most immediate thing that could be done to advance a frontier would be to realize the original Zond plan, with a space tourist. Orbital space tourism hasn't really done anything for us so far, it really needs to be deep space.
And I say Zond because I feel it's important the Russians or the Chinese or someone other than America does it first, because once people learn that Russia plans to send a Zond with a paying customer around the moon, everyone's going to rush to do it.
Not only that, but I mean, that was what Soyuz was originally designed for, to heft the Zond variant into a free return circumlunar trajectory, so the possibility of that happening isn't too far off.

I resized the Apollo 17 painting from 4000x2251 to 1500x844 to save for web, forgot about it, saved and continued painting until I couldn't turn back without realizing so fuck I permanently ruined it, I can't work at this rez

It was also REALLY cold last night, so coffee helped a lot.

Come to Tucson, Arizona, we have Kitt Peak Observatory.
The biggest, best Observatory this side of the Mississippi. They have one day a week where they'll point the thing anywhere you want it, and they have special telescopes to point at the sun.
It's absolutely extraordinary, sitting in this itty-bitty lawn chair in front of a megaton telescope, meekly asking the doctoral scientist to point the telescope at Mars
