Okay, so explain why the current M16 variants in US service are the M4 (with its variants), M16A2, M16A3, and M16A4. The M16A1 was shit anyways, and part of the reason why Vietnam ended up being such an epic fail (NVA and VC had the superior, at least at the time, AK-47).

Not just the gun, the picture overall. If the title is legit, then it's really something to see a picture of that quality from so long ago.
And the Garand led to the M14, which irrelevant of how practical or impractical it might be, is still pretty cool.

The issues with the M16A1 were mostly related to ammo and lack of cleaning supplies and education for the troops using them. It was an inherently very accurate, very controllable rifle, was very light and easy to manoeuvre, and once those issues were sorted it was an excellent combat weapon. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the M16A1, in fact I'd sooner have an A1 than any of the variants since because burst fire is fucking retarded and thanks to the AR system's modularity, you can easily roll an A1 lower with a flat-top upper and railed handguard for (useful) accessories if you want.
